Some Issues Rise; Business News Lacking.
NEW YORK, April 30 (U. P)~ Trading on the Stock Exchange came almost to a standstill today. Price movements were narrow. The tendency was to remain on the sidelines awaiting further developments. There was nothing in the news to sway the market. For a time the airplane division provided a. feature, but failed to attract a following and prices slipped off. In & few instances thin markets developed and a few transactions brought rather wide price changes. Examples were Union Pacific, which sold at 63, up 3; Eastman Kodak at 147%, up 215, and General Mills preferred at 122, up 4. Mullins Manufacturing lost 2% points. Otherwise net changes were fractional, with gains and losses balancing each other. Bonds were quiet with prices steady. Wheat eased sightly, while cotton futures were steady. Steel shares were quiet and steady in the face of indications of another deciine in the operating rate next week. American Smelting, Anaconda, Kennecott and International Nickel had small losses.

CLOSING RALLY RAISES WHEAT FRACTIONALLY
Oversold Longs Influence Brings Recovery; Corn Declines.
“A mild rally at the close when oversold longs suddenly began a movement to reinstate part of their
the previous: close on the Chicago Board of Trade. The upswing carried all futures above the previous close, wiping
out the day’s early losses. At the end wheat was %4 to cent higher, May 79% cents, corn was 1% to 3% cent lower, May 58 cents, and oats were % to 1% cents higher, May 28% cents. What little trading activity there was, was wholly without a feature and aside from prenotification switching from May to July or outright disposal of holdings, there was practically nothing done. Added to the pressure developed earlier on notification, was the joint May crop report of Mrs. E. H. Miller and the James E. Bennett Co. which placed the 1938 winter wheat yield at 736,000,000 bushels, a 19,000,000 bushel advance over the April 1 estimate. There was little, if any, demand. Corn prices were lower.
export Activity
There was little in the news to influence trading in e in either direction.

Triggs, Vera Brodsky to Play Tonight; World's Fair Music Preview Billed; Val Gielgud on Workshop Program
Philharmonic Gives Last| Concert of Season
Today.
“Good Music” by James Thrasher If you tune in WOR tonight at
"1 6:30 o’clock, you should hear Harold
Triggs, - the Jordan Conservatory’s head piano teacher, and his twopiano partner, Vera Brodsky, in a performance with the Elizabeth, N. J., Symphony Orchestra. If you have done much radio listening, you must have heard these duo-pianists at some time, for they have been frequent broadcasters, and on some of the most popular programs. For this evening's concert, they are scheduled to play an arrangement of Liszt's “Mephisto” Waltz for two pianos and orchestra. August May will be the orchestra’s conductor, and Leonard Liebling, the well-known critic and author, is to be commentator. ” ” 8
The New York World's Fair will have to go some if it lives up to the advance “buildup” which has started already, though the fair doesn’t open until a year from this summer. Tomorrow they are having a “music festival preview” on the exposition grounds, two portions of which are to be broadcast. The afternoon orchestra is not announced, but the program (2:30 . m., NBC-Blue) will feature a “World Fair March,” which the late George Gershwin wrote for the coming festivities. Also on the program are the Polka from Weinberg's “Sechwanda”’ and a March by Sibelius. In the evening both CBS-WFBM and NBC-Blue will carry a concert at 6 p. m. Participating will be the New York Philharmonic-Symphony, the Schola Cantorum and the Oratorio Society of New York. No less than four conductors also are listed: John Barbirolli, Albert Stoessel, Hugh Ross and the venerable Walter Damrosch. Mr. Barbirolli, the leadoff man,
untary for Trumpet, Organ and Percussion. Then Mr. Stoessel will lead the massed musicians in three Bach chorales of his own transcription. Mr. Ross draws the assignment for the opening chorus of Horatio Parker's “Hora Novissima,” and the concert will come to an appropriate climax with the choral
|! movement of Beethoven's Ninth
Symphony, with Dr. Damrosch presiding. 8 8 8 The busy Philharmonic-Sym-phony will be at its accustomed place before CBS microphones for its usual Sunday matinee broadcast (WFBM, 1 p. m.). And, more’s the pity, it will be the last of the eight season’s concerts. Like the Metropolitan Opera season, the orchestra's year will end with agner’s music. . Mr. Barbirolli will have Marjorie Lawrence and Charles Kullmann of the Metropolitan forces as hi$ soloists. Opening with the “Flying Dutchman” Overture, the concert will include parts of Act I of “Die Walkuere” and, from “Goetterdaemmerung,” Siegfried’s Rhine Journey, the Funeral March, and Bruennhilde's Immolation Scene. 5 3 o ”
The Detroit Symphony will have as guest soloists Efrem Zimbalist,
Reiner, the equally celebrated conductor, on its CBS-WFBM concert at 7 p. m. tomorrow. Mr. Zimbalist is noted for his impeccable - musicianship and lofty style of interpretation. But now and then, especially on his broadcasts, he lets us know that he can dazzle as well as inspire us with his fiddling. His selections for tomorrow night promise pleasure of a bravura sort. Included are his own fantasy on themes from RimskyKorsakov's “Le Coq d'Or,” Cui’s “Orientale” and the “Moto Perpetuo” of Novacek. Of interest among the orchestral pfferings are two pavanes, one the familiar, solemn and graceful one of Ravel, the other the pavane from the “Swing Symphonette No. 2” by the radio conductor, Morton Gould. 8 ” ” Pierre Monteux, who had the distinction of conducting the NBC ‘Symphony's first broadcast, will return tonight for two more appearances (8 p. m, NBC). The program contains three well-loved old friends, Beethoven's First Symphony, Sibelius’ “Valse Triste” and Strauss’ “Don Juan,” as well as two compositions more frequently met in books than on concert programs. They are Schumann’s “Manfred” Overture and Dukas’ “La Peri” ballet music. The Overture (Opus 115) is one of several pieces of incidental music written for Byron’s somber dramatic poem. Schumann considered it “one of his finest brain children.” It is interesting to note that the ballet “La Peri” stems from the same Persian legend that inspired Moore’s poem from which Schu~ mann drew his cantata, “Paradise and the Peri.” The ballet was first performed in Paris in 1912.
Flemish and Netherland madrigals of the 15th and 16th Centuries, and harpsichord music of the same period, will make up the program by the Madrigal Singers and Yella Pessl on NBC-Red stations at 11 a. m. tomorrow. ” # ” Besides Handel's Concerto Grosso No. 8, Bernard Herrmann and the Columbia Chamber Orchestra are
a5 | to. have another musical “first” for
your entertainment during their Money program (CBS-WFBM, 3 p. m.). This is a historical “premiere,” however. The music is “The Tempest” Suite, by Matthew Lock, 17th Century Englishman. Con incidental music to Shadwell’s version of the Shakespeare play, it also contains what are believed to be music’s first written dynamic directions. Lock gives such indications as “soft, lowder (sic) by degrees, violent, lowd, soft and slow by degrees.” : | Before Lock’s time, dynamics had

When NBC and CBS learned that Val Gielgud was on his way to California in a Danish ship, they immediately began negotiations with the British play director for guest appearances. Mr. Gielgud (brother of John, the noted Shakespeare actor) has won an international reputation for his play productions on BBC. He has consented to make two appearances. Today he will produce his own play, “Fours Into Seven Won't Go,” for the “Columbia Workshop” (5:30 p. m., CBS). Tomorrow at 5 p. m.,, he will direct G. K. Chesterton's “Lepanto” for NBC-Blue.
