~ ANIMAL SAFETY DRIVE LAUNCHED
Conservation Department Asks Aid of Drivers In Campaign.
By JOE COLLIER
Indiana’s traffic safety program was extended today by the State Conservation Department to include wildlife. The Department is convinced that more rabbits, for instance, are killed on the highways each year than are taken by hunters. On Jan. 1 the 75 game wardens began a census of the highway wildlife lead. Today their report read: 1931 rabbits, 71 ’possum, 62 squirrel, | ; 41 skunk, 26 pheasant, 17 quail, 11 muskrat, 9 raccoon, 3 fox, 3 groundhog and 2 mink. Only Partial Count
~ That count, the Department said, by no means represented the total, since only a fraction of the State’s highway mileage was covered. Moreover, at this time of the year, each of the victims left a widow and orphans or just orphans tucked away somewhere in the woods. The average litters for rabbits, squirrel, skunk, raccoon, fox, mink and groundhog is about five; for ’possum, 12; pheasant, 12 to 14: quail, 15, and muskrat, 6 to 8. The Department does not recommend that drivers going fast endanger the lives of the occupants . of the car by attempting to dodge - animals which pop suddenly into the highway. It does suggest, however, that motorists, seeing animals at the roadside far enough ahead, slow down, blow their horns, and dim lights. “Bright lights confuse the animals,” an official said. “If the lights were dimmed, the speed cut, and the horn sounded, a very considerable number of these victims would recover their wits and scamper to safety.” Rabbits Lead in Deaths
The known death toll shows rabbits to be far and away the most unfortunate. This is because, the Department said, of two reasons that apparently are here to stay. Rabbits like to be on the highest bit of ground in tHe vicinity, commanding the best possible view, so they can watch for their natural enemies. The highway, when rabbits are near oie, gives him a vantage point. And the reason he is more likely than the other animals to be near a highway is because the Highway Department sows grasses that he loves and thrives. on along the highways to prevent dirt shoulders from eroding. Thus, his vantage point and his food are in the worst of all possible places for his own good. The Department estimated today that at least 50 per cent of the deaths could be stopped if motorists would be considerate of the creatures.
$25,000 COOGAN GEM WAITS TRIAL VERDICT
Hearing on Suit of Former Star Opens Monday.
HOLLYWOOD, April 27—(U. PJ). —John Biby, court-appointed receiver in the Jackie Coogan ease, dropped a diamond the size of a robin’s egg into his strong box today and thereby hastened the motherson court battle toward its climax. The diamond once provided a $25,000 sparkle on the finger of Mrs. Arthur L. Bernstein, Jackie's mother, whom Jackie is suing for the millions he earned as the screen's first baby actor. Jackie claimed his mother and stepfather were withholding four - million dolars which rightfully belonged to ‘him. Mrs. Bernstein claimed Jackie's earnings belonged to her and said that they now amounted to less than $600,000. Receiver Biby must appear, prob‘ably today, before Judge Emmet H. Wilson with a complete list of Jackie’s—or Mrs. Bernstein’s—assets. The judge then will open trial Monday.
KENTUCKIAN SLAYS WIFE IN LOVE ROW
PHOENIX, Ariz., April 27 (U. P). —Archibald K. Francis, 55, a Kentucky farmer, told authorities today ‘he was ready to hang because he had killed his wife, “the finest woman in the world,” and a man whom he believed to be her lover. Mrs. Stella Francis, 49, and Louis P. Tripoli, 30, died last night, Mrs.
Francis from a bullet in her heart sy
and Mr. Tripoli from wounds in the chest, back and head. Francis faces a charge of first-degree murder. Francis arrived in Phoenix Monday to try to effect a reconciliation with his wife, from whom he had been separated for several years, Yesterday he went to his wife's boarding house with a gun. She attempted to snatch it irom his hand, Francis said, and in the scuffle she was shot. Then he shot Mr. Tripoli, who was sitting in the
dining room.
