BETTY ACCUSES MRS. COOGAN
‘Tried to Halt Our Marriage By Saying He Was Broke,’ Actress Charges.
HOLLYWOOD, April 22. (U. P)). —Betty Grable, actress wife of Jackie Coogan, today told how her husband's mother, Mrs. Lillian Coogan Bernstein, attempted to halt their marriage by informing Miss Grable that young Coogan was a pauper. The one-time boy actor, now penniless, prepared to go into court today and force his mother and stepfather to give an accounting of the approximately $4, 000,000 he earned as a child star. Miss Grable said that, soon after she and Jackie became engaged, Mrs. ‘Bernstein telephoned Miss Grable’s mother and said: “If Betty thinks she is marrying a rich boy, she is mistaken. He hasn't a cent. He's a pauper.”
‘We Were In Love’
“As if that made any difference,” said Miss Grable, who has been supporting her husband on her $500 a week movie earnings. “We were in love, and that’s all that matters. She thought that Jack’s not having any money would make me give him up. Well, it didn’t, and it neyer will.” Meanwhile, Wallace Beery went to Coogan’s defense and the judge who will hear the case announced that, hereafter, parents of child stars must establish trust funds for
4 | their offspring before he would ap-
prove their film contracts. Beery said he had played in a number of films with Jackie and knew his father well. Saving Money for Jackie “Not once, but many times Jack (Coogan Sr.) told me he never.intended to use a cent of the money his son earned,” Beery said. “He was careful always to impress upon everyone that Jackie's money was being saved for his own use when he reached manhood. I don’t know whether Jackie will want me to testify, but I want to help him in any way possible so that his father’s wishes may be carried out. When Jackie’s father died in an automobile crash in 1935 and Bernstein became the manager of Jackie Coogan Productions, Inc., Jackie said- his life beca a continued fight with the man who later married his mother.
