Gravet Finds No Need for Press Agent

His Adventures Dwarf Imaginations of Film

Publicity Men.

By JAMES THRASHER One of Hollywood's most fearful and wonderful- phenomena is its press agents’ imagination. The other day the mail brought an item which read in substance as follows—so help me: Lucille Ball is one of the few Hollywood actresses who has engaged in the hazardous sport of

shooting crocodiles from an airplane in South America. That would be pretty wonderful if Miss Ball even had been to South America, instead of working like a beaver the past few years as a Broadway show girl, mannequin and model, tp say nothing of small parts in a dozen or so pictures.

His Own Press Agent But there is one cinema star who doesn’t need this fantastic buildup— and doesn‘t get it. He is Fernand Gravet, the man who looks like the Duke .of Windsor, whom you may see-at the Circle this week in “Fools for Scandal” with Cardle

Lombard. Not from the publicity department, but from Mr. Gravet's own lips (by way of a reliable interviewer) comes this report. And truly it's a varied fund of information the actor possesses. Mr. Gravet can speak with authority on stag hunting, how to relax and go to sleep quickly, uniforms of fhe Napoleonic armies and how to tell the best pup in a litter. Urged on, the star has been known to tell how to train a horse to gallop backward, how to cast tin soldiers, the way a mongoose fights a cobra (with sound effects) and give various pointers on fencing, candid cameras and which wine goes best with what cheese. He also does sleight-of-hand tricks and writes song lyrics.

Former Belgian Cavalryman

Mr. Gravet is not French, but Belgian. He learned his riding and fencing in the Belgian cavalry. He learned about Napoleonic uniforms from one of his hobbies. He has designed and molded several thousand tin soldiers and dressed them accurately, - Museums, historical societies and movie researchers are said to call ‘on him for data. He is‘married to a French actress and broke - into American movies with “The King and the Chorus Girl.” That was straight comedy, but he also sings, as.you’ll find out if you go to the Qircle this week. # = = A safe guess is that one of our most provoked - citizens today is Spencer Tracy. ‘When he finished

his costarring' “part : ‘ith “Test Pilot” (now at Loew's) he went to the hospital for a miner operation, received the Motion Picture: Academy acting award in absentia, then packed up for his first real vacation in a long time. "Mr. Tracy practically had his foot on the: gangplank of the Europe-bound .. liner Manhattan when his studio called him back for story conference. . He flew into Chicago yesterday afternoon and went to bed “for a rest,” he told the United Press. By now he should be back on the coast, however; ready to talk over his next part in “North-

HOLLYWOOD, -April 22 w. P.).—Dorothy Lamour, movie and radio singer, said today her automobile was stolen and driven downtown by a fan who wanted her autograph. She said he telephoned her at the studio and said: “Don’t get sore. Your car is at Sixth and Main. All that’s missing is the registration tag from the steering wheel. It was the only way I could get your signature.” She said her chauffeur found the car where the man said it was.

Swing Has Its Own Meaning]

Rugcutters Put on Lots of Jam for Cats.

SCHENECTADY, N. Y., April 22 (U. P.).—To help the befuddled layman along in the “swing” crazy world, professional musicians have compiled a “dictionary” of terms used by orchestra men. To you, an alligator may be a reptile, but to an orchestra man it’s a fellow musician. Likewise, to the uneducated, cats are household pets, but swingsters know. cats as swingaddicted dancers. The “dictionary,” translations, follows: Long underwear men—classical

musicians. Lots of jam—plenty ‘of improvised playing. Armstrongs—high swing notes as hit by. Louis Armstrong. Negro or-) chestra leader. - Stomp and rave—dance and sine; Kick it Bround-passionats play-

ing. Beating the Skins-—playing the drums. Kick the doghouse—play the bass fiddle. : Iron harp—vibraphone. Ggwk box—band stand. Licorice stick—clarinet. Dixie—swing music. Honey—sweet music. A big bang—a good time. In the groove—dancers or musicians mellow with swing music. Rugcutters—swingsters. Alligators—swing musicians. Cats—swing crazy dancers.

McCORMACK SIGNS

Because her studio is convinced she possesses the finest potential lyric-coloratura voice on the screen, John McCormack has been engaged as vocal coach for Olympe (O-lamp) Bradna, 17-year-old French actress.
