ASKS TO DISCONTINUE PASSENGER SERVICE
The New York Central Railroad today petitioned the Indiana Public Service Commission for authoricy to discontinue passenger service on the South Bend-Kankakee branch line. In recent years the railroad has operated one gas-electric train each way daily. Total revenue during 1937 was $14,110, the petition said, while direct operating expense was $30,874 and indirect operating expense was $5009. Because the Federal Government is discontinuing mail service on ‘that line, the railroad said its operating deficit would be larger in 1938 than it .was last year.
