20 Detroit Hotels Facing Walkout; Coast Sugar Factory to Reopen. DETROIT, April 21 (U. P). — Fourteen Michigan factories were

strikebound today and 20 Detroit hotels were threatened by walkouts

in a new wave of labor disputes.|”

One controversy was settled temporarily when 200 members of the United Automobile Workers Union agreed to return to their jobs in Chrysler's Plymouth plant after filing charges of contract violation with the National Labor Relations Board. The men stopped work two days ago in protest against the companys « treatment of a union stewar Pickets continued to march in front of all eight of the Bohn Aluminum Corp, plants in Detroit and Hamtramck. The hotel strike was threatened by the Waiters and Waitresses Union, an American Federation of Labor Affiliate, unless independent hotels signed a contract similar to one concluded with the Detroit Hotel Assocjation.

Coast Sugar Strike - Ends in Street Fight

CROCKETT, Cal, April 21 (U.

P.).—A series of street fights were a

broken up by police today as striking warehousemen affiliated with the C. I. O. voted to end a fiveweek strike at the California-Ha-waiian Sugar Refining Plant. Officers restored order in 30 minutes, State Highway patrolmen and deputy sheriffs used tear gas and riot guns to disperse the 400 men who crowded the streets. A half dozen men were injured, none seriously, in the fist fights. Sheriff John Miller believed that quick action by officers avgrted a general riot, The rival workmen, part \of them A. F. of L. supporters and|part C. I. O, left the streets to return totheir respective halls. The decision to return to work at the same wage scales tha} prevalied in 1937 was made by a\ vote of 152 to 115.

Work Resumed at Fisher Body Plant

FLINT, Mich. April 21 (U. P.).— A three-day shutdown of Fisher Body Plant No. 1 and the Buick assembly line ended today when work med on schedule under a union t to call off a dues collection drive at plant gates. COLUMBUS, O., April 21 (U. P.). —Another of a series of conferences with Federal mediators was called for 2 p. m. today in an effort to end the. five-day strike of union streetcar men here. Conner, Federal mediator, said he “was “more optimistie” that an amicable settlement will be reached. Statements by union leaders reiterated that they were willing to arbitrate their demands for hourly wage increases of 10 to 13 cents and a closed shop. Company officials declined to comment. Previously, Ben W. Marr, company president, had said it would be impossible to yield to either demand.

Watkins, 27, suffering from a rare disease, settled own to rest today after an 8000mile trip from his Melbourne, Australia, home and cheerfully announced he was willing to take a chance—1 in 1000—that Mayo Clinic surgeons would be able to save his life. During the last eight years, his heart gradually has become encased with a covering of lime, result of a condition known as “constructive pericarditis.” During the last year, the progress of the ailment has become more marked and has obstructed one of the veins returning blood to the heart. The youth's. father, who accompanied him, said Australian physicians believed the boy might be treated successfully by surgery, but placed chances of success at 1000 01 “But we're willing to take it,” the son said.

Benefits for March Bring Total to $104,290,

Times Special CHICAGO, April 21 —Old-age insurance payments in Indiana during March under the Social Security Act totaled $23,342, Peter VanGeyt, Indianapolis field office director, said here today. Speaking at a regional meeting of the Social Security Board, he said the March certification brought the State’s total to $104,290. March applications for Social Security account numbers in Indjana totaled 1,030,929, he said. Indiana ranks 10th in the number of applicants.
