BANDIT HUNTED AFTER FUTILE
W. SIDE CHASE
Gunman Is Identified as Ernest Tait Following 70 M. P. H. Flight.
A bandit who escaped from 15 police cruisers, two State Police autos, two cars of Sheriff's deputies and several motorcycle policemen in a 70-mile-an-hour chase through city streets yesterday was hunted today.
The fleeing gunman was identified by police as Ernest Tait, convicted bank robber who escaped two years ago from the Indiana State Prison. He exchanged shots with a pursuing detective and wrecked the stolen auto he was driving, then escaped after being near capture three times. The stolen car beiongea to Lieut. Dan Scanlon of the Indianapolis police. The felon abandoned and set fire to it on the bank of Eagle Creek near the Indianapolis Railways’ gravel pits, boarded a trackl trolley and disappeared on the West Side. Cycle Throws Policeman
One police car crashed after gaining on the bandit and one po-
liceman was thrown from his motorcyle in the wild chase. None of
the officers was injured.
. The chase started after detectives received a “tip” that a man believed to have been one of two gunmen who robbed the Mickleyville Theater Sunday night was seen leaving a carnival in the 4800 block W. Washington St. A description of the man was broadcast. He was “spotted” at 16th St. and Gent Ave. by Radio Patrolmen Emerson McNew and George Hughes. They attempted to force the bandit car to the curb at Fall Creek Blvd. and Northwestern Ave. Additional police cars were sent into the chase. The two radio patrolmen attempted to gain on the fleeing car as it sped east on 16th St. to Senate Ave and south to Michigan st. On Michigan St. the police car crashed, breaking a wheel as it hit a curb. The bandit’s trail then was picked up by Motorcycle Policemen Henry Long, who believed he was trailing a speeder at 70 miles per hour. Officer Long's motorcycle skidded at St. Clair and Senate Ave., Tov to the pavement.
un Battle Starts
As State Police and Sheriff's deputies joined the search, the trail was picked ‘up by Detective John Sullivan, driving alone at Tremont and Michigan Sts. Officer Sullivan was close behind the bandit car at the Michigan St. crossing of the Big Four Railroad when the gun battle started. The bandit leaned from the window and fired at his pursuer and Officer Sullivan returned the fire. Thirty minutes later a burning car was found at the Indianapolis Railways’ gravel pit. After firemen extinguished the flames, it was found to be the car stolen from Lieut. Scanlon Friday.
Flees Across Trestle
Reports to police indicated the bandit fled from the scene across a railroad trestle and boarded a West Indianapolis trackless trolley, getting off in West Indianapolis. Detectives said Tait had been identified as one of two bandits who held up the theater at Mickleyville Sunday night following an unsuccessful robbery attempt at the Cinema Theater, 217 E. 16th St., the same night. Tait was serving a term for robbing the Speedway State Bank in 1936 with two other bandits.

U, CRIMINOLOGIST BACKS PAROLE PLAN
Officials Hear Sutherland Rap System’s Critics.
Times Special FT: WAYNE, April 20.—Dr. Edwin H. Sutherland, Indiana University sociology department head, today replied to critics of the parole system by arguing that if parole boards can be blamed for “freeing 30 per cent of America’s dangerous criminals,” then the courts can be blamed for “freeing” the other 70 per cent who are released on gompletion of their terms.
Dr. Sutherland, a nationally known criminologist, spoke before welfare and parole direetors of 17 Indiana counties. The meeting was the second of eight to be held throughout the state to institute Indiana’s new parole system provided in the 1936 Welfare Act.
is not paroled is so dangerous as J. Edgar Hoover says, it will: be released eventually by order of court. Then more'than twice as many dangerous criminals finally are released from prison without parole as are released by parole. “Mr. Hoover should have brought his indictment against the court which was benevolent or silly rather than against the parole board, if these statistics can be accepted.”
