_ Britain Must Act
~ And act she must, if the: Empire is to be held intact. At the height of what looked like Japan's success in. China, Tokyo's militarists ‘were talking dizzily of “northward drives,” “westward drives,” and “southward drives” which took in all Asia and the Western Pacific. Not only has Britain enormous interests in China proper, but the future of Hongkong, British East India, Australia and even India is at stake. On top of developments in Europe, the Chinese have sprung a surprise. They have inflicted ‘a major defeat on the Nipponese ‘army—a defeat which is playing havoc with that army’s prestige. In Asia, where “face” is vital, ‘dnd where Japan counted so heavily on a reputation for invincibility to win for her the supremacy which she has so long sought, this humiliation can not fail to cost her dearly. . And all the while, in every direction, the sands of time are running against Japan. She was in none too favorable a position, financially of economically, at the outset, and she counted on a quick and inexpensive war. Its prolongation may
ments, have begun what they hope will be the final attack on Tortosa, key to the Ebro River front, the Rebel Aragon radio announced today. 2 Gen. Gartia Valino led an advance which took the insurgents to Rogquetas, suburb of Tortosa, while 85 Rebel planes dropped thousands of small bombs on the Loyalist fortifications. Other Rebel units penetrated down the coast toward Castellon and to the center of the marshy Ebro delta. Galician troops reached a point several miles south of the villages of Peniscola and Santa Magdalena De Pulpis, below Bemicarlo, capturing 200 prisoners and 20 machine guns, the Salamanca Rebel radio asserted.

exhaust her limited resources. Entire Army in Action
A similar state of affairs exists $ with regard to her manpower. Her entire standing army is said to have been brought into play, plus|@ a large number of reservists. Unless she can extricate herself shortly 4 from the Chinese trap into ‘which she deliberately waiked, she will be an easy mark for any stronger power. To the north, across the Amur River, lies such a power. The Japanese have long said they must either defeat Russia or Russia eventually will defeat them. Were Russia suddenly to attack now, Japan probably would be doomed. She could hardly fight a winning war against China on one side and Soviet Russia on the other. ‘So it would appear that the best Japan can hope for now, unless both the Chinese situation and the inter- bolero iackets. pl national situation change rapidly Ol ey Sie. Japanese Claim Capture of Linyi
SHANGHAI, April 20 (U. P).— Japanese spokesmen asserted today that their armies had captured Linyi, 90 miles northeast of Suchow, in one of two offensives aimed at outflanking Chinese ‘lines in southern Shantung Province. The other was against Hanchwang, 60 miles southwest of Linyi, which the Chinese claimed they had occupied, although admitting ‘their position was difficult. The Chinese said the Japanese continued. to hold Hanchwang’s railroad station and several villages north of the city.
