SDAY, APRIL, 19, 3-Star. Air Movie Set For Loew's
‘Test Pilot,’ Coming Friday Is Authentic; King Kept Hustling.
~ By JAMES THRASHER Not content with offering patrons three of its top drawing cards, M-G-M seems intent upon providing some authentic aviation thrills in “Test Pilot,” coming to Loew’s on Friday. : For stars, the picture boasts Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy, who las had an operation and the Motion Picture Academy acting award since his last picture. Behind the scenes are Lieut. Comm. Frank Wead, author, and Paul Mantz and Ray Moore, both noted fliers, as technical advisors. The film’s Thompson Trophy Race sequences will contain actual scenes filmed by three camera crews in Cleveland last summer. And in order that the audiences won't find flaws to pick, the studio bought a couple of the racing planes for
closeups. Earl Ortman took second | f
money in the plane in which Mr. Gable is seen at close range.
“Advisor to Earhart Once
Mr. Mantz, chief technical advisor, at one time was copilot and navigator with Amelia Earhart. Later he turned to Hollywood's frequent elopements and made them pay. He is-known as the “Flying Cupid,” and his plane is called the Honeymoon Express.. In it he takes prospective brides and grooms to Yuma, Ariz., where there .are no legal delays to a quick wedding. Before taking a job as Mr. Mantz’ assistant, Mr. Moore ran the “air ferry” between San Francisco and Oakland. The idea was good, but the fog offered such competition that he took to instruction and doing what Mr. Gable does in the coming picture—trying out new Planes. » » #
Because Wayne King and his orchestra are doing their regular biweekly broadcasts on tour, the Lyric show schedule is being arranged accordingly” this week. Last nights WFBM broadcast offered few difficulties, coming at 9 p. m. But tonight's program over WIRE at 7:30 DP. m. offers more trouble. The Lyric manager, Ted Nicholas, finally has booked stage shows this evening at 6:07 and 9:02 p. m. That will give Mr. King about 23 minutes to hustle men and instruments to the N. Meridian St. station, get set up in the studio and go on the air. Personal appearances being something of an avocation with Mr. King, his contract stipulates that ;radio must come first. So, during the remaining five weeks of his tour, he will be busy juggling vaudeville schedules to meet broadcast necessity, and hoping that the theaters and studios aren't at oppo‘site ends of the cities where he is booked.
JUNIOR BAND TO PLAY
The Jordan Conservatory’s 42piece junior band will give a concert tonight at the Fisher schoolhouse near Noblesville.

Toys Show Trend Away From War and Gangster Motif; Sidewalk Cafes Now Open.
NEW YORK, April 19.—The most comforting news of the day, it seems to me, is a toymaker’s report of a pacifist trend in his business. He was talking of it the other day in the lobby of the McAlpin, where all the nation’s toymakers will assemble soon with samples of their wares.
War, he happily declares, is on the wane as a motif in the latest toys and the rising generation is becoming bored with the phalanxes of tin and wooden soldiers. There isn’t much of a market any more for junior arsenal equipment and the pop-gun has taken a dive in the adolescent fancy. So it is a ‘cheerful sign to hear that the boys and girls lean heavily toward Charlie McCarthy . and, though most little men are abashed about cherishing dolls of Snow White, they cry for the Seven Dwarfs and mechanical Dopeys have won the hearts of most of the kids of America. A Shirley Temple doll, incidentally, still is one of the big sellers. On the crime front the toy manufacturers’ inventories show that cops are selling faster than robbers, which is a clear indication that youngest Americans are leaning on the side of law and order.
Garden Tools Popular
If you suspect. that the children are in a brooding mood this year and won't play, you are horribly mistaken, because this man fells me that seven acres of space are required to display all the brands of toys that are being manufactured. The farmer, by the way, is in the spotlight this year and there are countless gardening implements in miniature. Swing, too, has been officially recognized, for that is the kind of music the kids will hear when they wind up the spring in the toy bands. Styles in clothes will be fashionable and the last word: dolls now can be equipped with smart airplane luggage and shoe wardrobes. It happened at one of those Park Ave, parties at which “cafe society” shows up. Before the dinner began, a young man with a monocle and a

for a gentleman—and found he had a ribbon in his coat. The confounded headwaiter, I suppose.” “Oh, no,” replied the other, “he is the guest of the evening.” “Hang it all, is he?” exclaimed the florid Britisher. “Look here, old chap, would you mind sitting next to me at dinner and telling me who’s who?” “Sorry, I can’t sit,” came the direct reply, “you see, I happen to be the confounded headwaiter.”

The town is going out of doors, now the snows have fled, and this corner already has stooped under the burden of spring bulletins from sidewalk cafes, hotel roof gardens, alley promenades and suburban retreats. There will be approximately 1167 such alfresco places as the crocuses
come to full bloom, but three that |
will remain this corner’s favorites are the Sunken Plaza in Radio City, the Breevoort’s sidewalk cafe, and the Chatham Walk which dissects a sidestreet in midtown and resembles a gay block party with vivid sumbrella tops and hued buntings. The Sunken Plaza is the luxurious aristocrat of outdoor restaurants. As for the Breevoort, its sidewalk cafe is the closest replica around here of Paris’ famous Cafe de la Paix.
We like the quips of the travel-
ing novelist who has just returned from Africa where he saw, in upper Rhodesia, the famous Victoria Falls. He took a long look, sighed and turned to his friend: “Compared to these, Niagara is just a light sweat.”
Movie Drama
Scenario for a novel: The wife of
a well-known fellow-about-town was tidying the parlor one evening and was about to toss an unused book of matches into the wastebasket when her eye caught a pencilled inscription on the inside cover. It said: “Here is my heart, don’t tell my wife.” So, her marital faith shaken, she confronted him with the evidence and prepared to depart the marriage hearth forever. The harassed mate admitted to his own handwriting. But he vehemently denied any extramarital activity, His denials fell upon deaf ears. His wife left the house and for a week thereafter, he brooded about the strange inscription on the match book. Finally, the light dawned. He telephoned his wife in a frenzy of self-justification. Told her what an intolerant fool she had been and explained that, 10 nights previously, he had phoned the neighborhood movie to check the current attractions and, . naturally, had written down the titles of the double feature on his match case. Women have hurried to Reno for lesser misunderstandings.

New Rink, Gym At Ripple pork;
Plans to construct a new roller skating rink, gymnasium and office building at Broad Ripple Park were announced today by W. A. McCurry, president of the corporation which recently purchased the amusement park. This is the first step in a proposed plan to make the park a year - round recreational center.
Work is to begin as soon as extensive repairs, now under way, are completed. The present rink and adjacent buildings are to be demolished and a children’s playground constructed on the present site. The new rink will be comparable in size and construction to any in the country, Mr. McCurry said, and the gymnasium will be equipped for basketball and other. winter recreations. Repairs on the swimming pool have been completed, and within the next few days pumps will begin the 269-hour task of filling the huge basin with well water. The park’s official opening date is May 28. ;
