PACE 1 Spring Activities on Local Tennis Courts Presage Busy Season
Paintings of Winter Floods and Adriatic Serenity Offer Sharp Contrast in Cleveland Art Exhibit at John Herron.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON Newly rolled and freshly lined tennis courts, bustling with activity this week-end, present undeniable evidence that summer’s on the way. Saturday was opening day on the courts of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Sheerin and Mr. and Mrs. Austin H. Brown, whose friends are accustomed to drop in infor-
mally for a few sets on sunny afternoons. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, whose entire family is enthusiastic about tennis, have installed a new cement court this season where their son, Nelson, a member of the Shortridge High School tennis team, is getting in some early practice. A group of Sylvester Johnson Jr.'s friends who tried out the new court Saturday afternoon included the Misses Nina Brown, Irving Moxley, Prudence Brown, Dora Sinclair and her fiance, Louis F. Loutrel Jr. of Boston, Noble Dean and Nelson Johnson. Among Mrs. Johnson's friends who last year enjoyed women’s doubles together and who are eagerly anticipating games on the new court are Mesdames Elias C. Atkins, Garvin M. Brown, Egbert Driscoll, Ward Hackleman and Mrs. Thomas Harvey COX. Mr. Sheerin’s “Old Men's Club,” punctual as spring, took over their court Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Impeccably clad in white flannels, sweaters and sneakers (which they admit will never again be as spotless this season) they initiated the reconditioned court while the “ladies” were permitted to admire their form, skill and sartorial splendor from the terrace sidelines. Habitues of Mr. and Mrs. Sheerin’s court include Mrs. Sheerin’s brothers, Kenneth, Gilbert and Edward Ogle; Gen. Robert H. Tyndall, John L. Eagles field, Walter W. Kuhn and George L. Denny. The Misses Laura and Mary Jane Sheerin’s return from college in June is the signal for the younger set’s games to begin. : T Mr. and Mrs. Donald McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. Garvin M. Brown and Mr. and, Mrs. Atkins started the season Saturday afternoon on ‘the court at Mr. and Mrs. Austin H. Brown’s country place at Wil= liams Creek and 96th St. There on week-ends Mr. and Mrs. Driscoll, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Taylor, Mrs. Hackleman, Mrs. William C, Bobbs, Mrs. Post Milliken and Miss Marjorie Cowan also frequently stop in for games. :
Cleveland Exhibit at John Herron
Attracting a large number of visitors is the exhibit of 32 paint= ings by Cleveland artists on display. for a month at John Herron Art Museum. The canvases are a part of the ninth circulating exhibition of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Typical of the elements’ behavior in recent months is Paul B. Travis’ “Winter Flood,” depicting the angry rush of water flowing through downtown streets at doortop height. Mr. Travis was a member of the Indiana Artists’ exhibit jury this spring. He is also represented in the group of still lifes with “Flower and Landscape.” A striking nude study, “After the Bath,” by Rolf Stoll reveals a colored maiden drying her white mistress’ feet. Mechanically correct is Clarence H. Carter’s “Industrial Forms” showing the tall cylinders of a grain elevator with freight cars and engine below. Edmund Brucker and Paul V. Ulen are represented by self portraits. One of the most compelling studies in the entire show is E. Ladislaw Novotny’s “Adriatic Serenity.” A calm-faced fisherman clad in a rose colored shirt and an equally tranquil woman in a ‘white blouse with a yellow shawl on her head stand in the foreground. Above the blue-green water on the wharf behind them are barrels brimming with fish and in the distance rise shadowy gray hills, Blue-gray8 and warm blues dominate Rudolf Bundasz’s street Between tall stucco buildings groups of figures are gathered. In the foreground a native woman carries @ basket of fruit on her head and a water jug on her arm. Not to be overlooked are Mary Susan Collins’ “Black Creek,” Thomas. Clough’s “Harbor, Cleveland,” and the still lifes by H. Gregory Prushek, E. Bart Gerald, Clarence H. Carter, Clara L. Deike and Nils Hanson.
