SCHOOLS MUST FAGE TRENDS, SPEAKER SAYS
New York Professor Speaks At Elementary Education Parley at I. U.
Times Special ‘BLOOMINGTON, April 18.—New trends in education.are a challenge to educators, Dr. Gertrude Hildreth, psychologist at Lincoln School of Teachers College, New York, said at the 15th annual Conference on Elementary Education at Indiana University today. Educators from throughout Indiana are attending. “Unless school people accept the challenge, education will pass from the institutions known as schools to be taken over by other enterprises that can recognize the children’s fundamental learning needs and make learning experiences more profitable for them,” Dr. Hildreth said. Happier children, better organized behavior, better trained children, when these newer trends are in force, are evidence of the superiority of newer trends, she said.
Some Old Values Needed
“The chief danger is in discarding all that was good in the old scheme. Our graduates testify to the need for some formalism, some factual instruction in their elementary school program.” Referring to teachers, parents and home relationships, Dr. Hildreth said: “No cshool system can hope to develop a more progressive program without parent co-operation. Parents need to understand the new trends and how they have come about. They tend to object to new phases "in the program different from their own school experiences. “These objections can be met only by conferences among school, teachers and parents. We find the concept of readiness can be understood and appreciated by parents procvided they are given some preparation. It is enly human nature to resist innovations.” : Other speakers today were President Herman B. Wells, Casper O. Dahle and Nila B. Smith, Indiana University, and Frederick G. Neel,
