EARLY HISTORY OFRAILROADS IN

INDIANA ISSUED

Rails Reached Indianapolis, ‘Village at End of Road,’ Oct. 1, 1847.

A history of railroad transporta- |}

, tion in Indiana during the Forties and Fifties by Wylie Daniels, In‘dianapolis, was released today by the Indiana Historical Society. The 112-page publication, “The Village at the End of the Road: A Chapter in Early Indiana Railroad History,” is based upon contemporary newspaper “material. Newspaper publicity was essential, publishers said, because railroads were financed largely by lotal stock subscriptions. At that time newspapers published advertisements, accounts of meetings and annual reports in addition to editorial comment. _ Indiana’s first railroad, the Madison and Indianapolis, was begun at Madison in 1836 as a State project, but in 1842 it was taken over by pri‘vate companies. It finally was completed in 1841. when the “famous” cut was completed—7000 feet long with a 5.9 per cent grade.

Struggled for Funds

After considerable struggle to obtain funds for its completion, the railroad reached Indianapolis on Oct. 1, 1847. Its completion is generally accepted as the most significant single event in the early history of the capital. Prior to that time, Indianapolis was dependent on roads which were described as intolerable in summer ~'and impassable in winter. It was practically: mudbound for several -months of the year. The change wrought by the railroad was easily discernible. The price of wheat doubled.. Plans for other railroads went forward rapidly. These included branch lines connecting Shelbyville, Rushville and Knightstown with the Madison railroad, thus providing a market for the agricultural produce” of central Indiana. In one season, 1850-51, about 75,000 hogs were ‘hauled to Madison. From 1847 to 1852 Madison editors referred to Indianapolis as “the village at the end of the road,” according to Mr. Daniels.

20 M., P. H. Good Speed In addition.to tracing the development of railroad transportation, Mr. Daniels tells of the early locomotives and cars used on the Madison & Indianapolis road. Twenty miles an hour was good speed for a

passenger train. Wood was used as fuel. On smaller roads: it was customary for the passengers to help “wood up” the engine, while water was dipped with leather buckets from some wayside stream. From this practice arose the expression, “jerk-water trailroad.” Excursions on the railroads were popular. Of early railroad accidents one of the worst was that on the inclined plane at Madison in 1844 in which four persons lost their lives. In 1853 three cars on the Lafayette foad were thrown off the track at . the edge of Indianapolis when the train ran over a cow. Illustrations in the book include a view of the Union Station in the late 1850s, a time card of 1852, and a reproduction of a drawing of Indianapolis in 1846.

WOMEN HOLD MANY WISCONSIN OFFICES

MILWAUKEE, April 16 (U. P.).—

Several Wisconsin communities are |

trying various phases of petticoat government, with women serving as mayors, village presidents, city attorneys and clerks. Mary Spellman was a school mistress for 51 years before she became

mayor of Beaver Dam in 1934. Her former pupils induced her to become mayor. . Mrs. May Humphrey is not averse to doffing her mantle as president of the village of Patch Grove to don the uniform of a practical nurse she wore for 35 years in Grant County. Wisconsin has 11 women serving as city clerk at Waukesha, Port Washington, Beloit, Fennimore, Au.gusta, New London, Portage, Toma“hawk, New Richmond, Menominee and Rhinelander. One wonian succeeded another as city attorney at Madison. Miss Addie Lynch, city “clerk at Port Washington, believes that women “have more patience and _ tact” than men in public office.

“INSURANCE CO. HAS BUSINESS INCREASE

FT. WAYNE, April 16 (U. P).— A substantial increase in business during the first quarter of 1938 was "reported today by the Lincoln National Life Insurance Co. Arthur F. Hall, president, said insurance in force with the company increased $16,000,000 since Jan. 1, 1938, to an all-time high of $969,-

000,000. New paid business since the first of the year totalled $41,226,000, an

jnerease of 20.6 per cent over the

corresponding period of 1937, Mr, Hall said.

“Terminations of insurance have not been frequent despite the business recession,” Mr. Hall said.

SOUTHERNERS LASH YOUNG UNION LEABER

TUPELO, Miss., April 16 (U.P) — Jimmy Cox, young labor leader, fled from Tupelo today after receiving hospital treatment for injuries received at the hands of a dozen men who abducted him, stripped him of clothes, and lashed his nude body while he was stretched over

a log. The beating occurred at an soiated spot about 20 miles from

Deh Potter, International Ladies Garment Workers Union representative, said she talked with Mr. Cox later. “He told me the men threatened to tie a rope around his neck and

cided against it,” Miss Potter said. “They lashed him with their belts, cutting his back and injuring him severely. “He managed to escape and get to Pontotoc but I don’t know how.”
