‘0.8 Bond Issues Soar To New 1938 High.

NEW YORK, April 16 (U. P).— Stocks advanced 1 to 4 points in active trading today. Bonds gained, led by United States Government issues, six of which made new highs _ for the year. Inflation sentiment brought buying orders into markets. The dollar declined for the same reason.

Major commodity markets, except

grain, were closed in extension of the Good Friday holiday. Foreign markets were closed. It was the fourth consecutive rise in the Dow-Jones Industrial Stock Average, which touched a new high since March 21. Railroad shares “had their first rise in five sessions .and utilities their second in as many. Some lines of business reporting today showed gains, including retail trade which made the usual seasonal rise but was below the Easter volume of 1937. Construction awards and automobile output were

higher. Business News Ignored

Car loadings made a small decline and some sections reported another confraction in steel operations, indicating a decline in the national rate next week. Traders ignored business news, however, and concentrated on inflation psychology loosed by the Administration. Release of gold from sterilization and reduction in reserve requirements were seen as highly inflationary measures.

Decrease in required reserves of |;

"Federal Reserve member banks releases vasi sums which can be spent in the market for Government * bonds. That market reflected this potential buying. Metal issues were bid up. So were building shares. Aviations strengthened.. Gains in the main list were spread over a broad market. In some instances inactive stocks were up more than 5 points. Farm issues developed a thin market and shot ahead. Oils, rubbers and other commodity stocks were strong. Demand was sustained and the market closed at or near the best levels of the session.

LATE SELLING EASES WHEAT FRACTIONALLY

Crop Uncerlainty Continues;

Corn, Oats Follow * Trend.

CHICAGO, April 16 (U, P).—

Wheat prices moved in an extremely narrow range in today’s half-ses-sion on the Chicago Board of Trade.

At the close wheat was 2 to 5% cent lower in a late selling move-

ment, May 84% cents; corn was %

and oats %4 to % cent higher, May to 3% cent lower, May 60% cents 293s cents. A holiday in Liverpool and Buenos Aires tended to hold down activity in the local pit where prices opened higher but eased almost im-

mediately on reports of good rains

last night in Nebraska. The uncertainty over the Texas and Oklahoma wheat crop condition was heightened toddy by con-

‘| flicting reports on the damage done by last week’s blizzards.

Crop Reports Unfavorable From Houston, Tex., a report said wheat “suffered some setback,” and

from Dallas came a report placing damage around 20,000,000 bushels, almost half the crop. H. C. Donccan, Chicago crop expert who has been touring the deep Southwest, has consistently reported that damage has been far less than first re3 | ported after the blizzards struck.

Corn prices were slightly higher

despite local receipts of 781 cars for Friday and Saturday. Export in-

terests looked for a rising demand

and some of today’s mid-session buying was based on this.

eat demand abroad was. ex-

pected to be negligible until afier

Liverpool reopens next Tuesday after the Easter holidays.

Porkers Close ‘Week Steady; Cattle Gain

small hog marketings at general-

Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Top Jeld at $8.80 for mostly 210-220-pound butchers. Packing sows were scarce, a few moving from $7.40 to $7.75, with good lightweight butcher types quotable above.

Compared with the close last week’s all weights of hogs ended on a steady basis after declines early in the week were later erased under curtailed supplies. Packing sows closed steady to strong over sales late last week. Most of the good and choice barrows and gilts sold this ' morning on the following schedule, strictly . choice, uniform lots quotable slightly above: All classes of fat cattle moved up again this week, led by substantial gains in slaughter heifers and cows. Steers and yearlings show strong to 25 cents over a week ago, with most upturn on plain and medium grades, heavier waterfills due to the warmer weather, figuring in the gain. Two loads of choice 1017-pound long yearlings made $10 for the top steer price, with the bulk largely $8 to $9. Choice heifers were scarce but salable to $9, most heifers being shortfed ‘and medium to good descriptions selling around $7.50 to $8.50. Strictly good beef cows with weight enough for Kosher account made $7 and $7.25 with other beef cows mostly $5.75 to $6.75. Cows in only cutter and low cutter flesh ranged from $2 to $5.75, little below $4.50 except very inferior sorts. With stocker and feeder prices running close to fat cattle rates, most of the country demand has dropped to plain and medium grades of thin cattle costing $7 to $8.25. Vealers lost $1 last Monday and another 50 cents Friday to close the week $1.50 under the finish of last week. The late top rested at $10.50. There was no trade in fat lambs today. Compared with the close of last week, the fat lamb market is off 25 to 50 cents with maximum losses on wooled offerings. The best wooled lambs of the week cashed at $8.50 with the better grades bulking at $8 to $8.50. Top shorn lambs were taken at $8.15 late in the week. The season’s first scattered arrivals of spring lambs went mostly at $11 down, a few genuine specialties higher.
