Stan Gets Smile as Judge Rules Child Doesn't Need Frills.

HOLLYWOOD, April 15 (U. P).— Stan Laurel, the serious-faced comedian, smiled today after a judge decided that his 10-year-old daughter could live happily and healthfully without such luxuries as a $2000 vacation and $15 beauty treatments, Judge Leslie E. Still denied the request of Mrs. Lois N. Laurel, the comedian’s first wife, for $1353 a month to support the child. «A 10-year-old child does not need all the things that have been stated in this request,” the judge said. In addition to vacation and beauty treatments, Mrs. Laurel had asked $200 for governess and a chauffeur, $35 for amusements, $50 for restaurant meals, $100 for outdoor exercise, $75 for emergencies and $15 for presents to school teachers. «Too many. people,” the judge said, “have chiseled big hunks of money from Mr. Laurel. Most of his income is spent on things he does not get. I believe if ever an emergency arose, Mr. Laurel would do anything in the world for the child. But at the present time, Mrs. Laurel is in better circumstances than he is.” Laurel testified he gave his former wife $274,438 and also an annuity policy paying her $500 a month. ' He said his $160,000 film income for this year already was spent.

He walked onto a set of the motion picture, “Spawn of the North,” walked down a short flight of steps while the cameras ground, and was told he was through for the day.
