Straight-From-the-Shoulder Action Picture Based on Life of Famous Italian Explorer Sacrifices Historical gl Acguracy, but Packs the Thrills.

Sv By JAMES THRASHER A look at Loew’s film this week should prove both surprising and

During: a subsequent.imprisonmens, at the close of the 13th Century, he set down a very fantastic history of the East. It took a few hundred years for later travelers to discover that most of his stories were true. _ Mr. Goldwyn’s Marco Polo had some rdther faniiliar cinematic adventures in’ ancient Cathay.. But

their “recording is so direct and]

the real Marco’s memoirs are forgotten. In the film, the Polo Brothers of Venice (Jewels, Furs, Knick-Knacks, Notions & Sundries) send their son and nephew Marco, on a hazardous trip to the Orient—object, trade agreements. With him goes Binguccio (Ernest Truex), one of the firm's bookkeepers, afflicted with faint heart and sore feet. The Seven Seas, sand storms and a few snowslides overcome, they turn up in Pekin. Their first encounter is with Chen Tsu, who introduces them to the snaky native dish of spag-het and to gunpowder; two things, the reader needs not be reminded, that have made history. t Eventually the visiting Italians reach Kublai Khan's court. In history, the: Khan was a mighty war-

Marco’s quick wit saves him from Kaidu’s executioners, and later he contrives to save the general's life and win his favor. So when a messenger bird brings news that Kublai Khan has gone to make war on Japan and Ahmed is causing trouble at home, Marco and the whole Tartar force set out. Marco, disguised as a peasant, reaches the Princess just as she is preparing for an unwilling marriage to Ahmed. Kaidu arrives later. When things look worst, Marco hunts up Chen Tsu, takes: all his
