Lame Arm Ballplayer’s Chief Worry: Schoolboy Rowe Is Still Seeking Cure
By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer ‘NEW YORK, April 15.—One day last week Schoolboy Rowe was seen walking down the main street of a Small country town in Florida. He was far away from the base of his team’s operations. The Tigers were back in Lakeland working out. The Schoolboy was alone. - “What are you doing in this . place?” “I heard there was a country doctor here who might help my arm, 80 I took a bus and came over to see him.” This pictures briefly the despera‘tion of a big league star whose arm has suddenly gone dead on him. He is like a chronic sufferer from some stubborn malady. Ultimately he reaches the point where he will submit to ally sort of treatment. The time comes when even the quacks hold out comforting promise.
The Schoolboy had been to all the recognized bone specialists. They had worked on his arm, prescribed a scientific formula. One day the Schoolboy would look all right, the next he would have trouble getting the ball as far as the plate. Somebody told him about this country doctor. Maybe this was the miracle ‘worker: he had been looking for. So as he says, he got on a bus and Visited him. It’s still a question whether he'll ever pitch well again. Benny Bengough’s arm began to 80 back on him in 1926. He was the first-string catcher of the YanKees at the time and was just cominto his own as a star ballplayer. The Yankees had every ‘reputable specialist in the country Work on Bengough’s arm. Some theiped him temporarily, others not a Bonesetter Reese was alive at the time. All the ballplayers went to
specialist with independent ideas and had performed some minor miracles with atrophied soup bones. He was one of those who helped pump a few drops of life back into the Bengough whip. It was fleeting but it was something,
A Pal of Gehrig
In those days Bengough roomed with Lou Gehrig and every time the Yankees invaded the West the two players got into a motorcar and drove to Youngstown, O., to see the bonesetter. There was nothing wrong with Gehrig's flipper but he was fond of Bengough and liked to drive. They'd get up at 5 o'clock in the morning, drive from Cleveland to Youngstown and return in time for the game. Bengough would catch that afternoon and invariably turn in a good job. This always gave him new hope the arm was getting well. He'd continue to do a good job ‘back of the plate for two Jor three weeks and then the arm would go dead again. In due time he had to admit to himself the condition was chronic. This was where the charlatans stepped in. “I heard about some guy in St. Louis,” said Bengough, “who put you in an electric chair and shocked you back to life, so I went to see him. What could I lose? If I couldn’t get the arm back in shape I was through with baseball anyway.
Just Like Dying
“Well, this guy had a regular electric chair all right. It frightened you just to look at it and when you sat in it you began to say your prayers. He attached an electrode to my right shoulder—I was bare to the waist—and said, ‘Now you tell me when you've had enough’ “That was a hot one right off. Tell him when I had enough! How.
him. He was a sort of self-made
