CITY LACKS CASH TO INSTALL NEW TRAFFIC LIGHTS

stallations at four street intersec-
tions, TTheo Dammeyer, Safety ‘Board president, said today. He said when present - projects are finished and funds are depleted the city still will be in need of automatic signals at one intersection. 51 flasher stop signals and 19 safety zones. A total of $2811.69 of the budgeted gas tax $5400 allotment already has been expended. The remainder of the funds are being spent to add lights on Michjgan St. \from Capitol Ave. to Alabama St., new signals at the Shelby St. bridge over Pleasant Run, College Ave. at Fall Creek Blvd..and at Alabama and 16th Sts. - “Other automatic traffic signals are needed at street intersections throughout the City, the most urgent need being at Delaware and Maryland St., Mr. Dammeyer said. New automatic signals installed by the Board in the last few weeks include Capitol Ave. and Michigan Sts.; Market and Illinois, Michigan and Illinois and Capitol Ave. and Market Sts.
TENNESSEE VALLEY TO BE MUNITIONS CENTER
NASHVILLE, Tenn. April 13 (U. P).— y authorities have perfected plans for defense of the Tennessee Valley as result of a move to make headquarters for manufacture of munitions and airplanes, Government and Army officials disclosed today. The valley, almost in the center of the eastern United States, would be protected by a virtual ring of Army posts and airbases on three sides and “by the 6000-foot Appalachian Mountains on the east in event of national emergency, it was learned. - ‘The vast sources of hydro-electric power within the valley not only make possible cheap manufacture of munitions, but with large supplies of copper ore in east Tennessee, iron in Alabama and a large aluminum processing plant at Alcoa, Tenn., would simplify manufacture of airplanes, it was pointed out.
