In “Over the Wall" Cony vict Sings ‘Way! to Pardon and Girl.

' Warden Lewis E. Lawes," who should know about such things, is credited with writing the. peniten-tiary-life story which is on the Lyric screen this week, Its title ds “Over the Wall.” but it might just as well be “The Sing Sing Follies” or “The Big Jailbreak of 1938.” Nowadays even the movie cowboys and convicted criminals are bursting forth in song. So, in “Over the .| Wall,” you'll find prison ‘broadcasts with stalwart baritones, tap dancers, dance bands and what: nots. - During intermissions ‘we have the

He finally gets assigned to . the hospital ward, where a wounded -gangster: tells him -who really did the murder. for which he is serving time. So Jerry makes an escape and seeks out the man who framed. him. Meanwhile, the warden, Governor. and girl friend have.cleared up the case for him. The chaplain rushes in on Jerry and the gangster, just as the hero is about to pull the trigger. The day saved, Jerry rushes off to the state capitol to sing, this time on the Governor's broadcast. And he gets the pardon and the girl. “Over the Wall” is filled with stock situations, and proceeds at a slow and obvious pace. Dick Fo Foran, who learned his crooning in Westerns, is: the hero. Arrived Through Floods The Lyric stage show got away on time for the opener yesterday— as is its admirable custom—though downstate ‘floods barely let the “Three Cheers for Rhythm” cast arrive on time. The revue is built. around a girls’ band, called “Diplomats of Rhythm,” directed by: dorothy Dae, and a chorus. ' Among others, the’ bill presents Roy Cummings. Mr. Cummings’ specialty has been, and remains, getting mixed up with the scenery in his embarrassed but impulsive banter with a pretty partner. ‘The advertised headliner is ‘Walter Walters, ventriloquist, and . his “mouthpiece,” Frankie. Despite the vogue, Mr. Walters’ ventriloquism isn’t too amusing. Much better is the acrobatic turn by. Flagg and Arnold, who do amazing feats of sirengin and balance with perfect
