Life Along Ohio in 1850s

Loew’s Drama
THRASHER
‘Most of our 1938 movies, ironically, have been bearing out the tradi-
tional, cautious film foreword: *.
. Any similarity to actual persons,
living or dead, is purely coincidental. » ® So it is refreshing to find in Loew’s current picture, “Of Human
Hearts,
human problems and emotions, humor that doesn’t consist of falls : and chases, actors who really disShoe, 2 “similarity to Sal per-
No picture since “The Life of Emile Zola” has given us such sat--isfying performances straight down the cast-of-characters line. Nor, in the matter of artistic discernment and true sense of values, has Clarence Brown, Shestion been urpassed ce prize-winning film biography. Walter Huston, James Stewart and Beulah Bondi are the principal players. ' But it Is not a “star” picture.
Guy Kibbee Excells
Guy Kibbee does his best work in years, apparently grateful for re- : lief from years of typed characterizations. His bit as a country store- : keeper in an 1850 Ohio River settlement is matched by Charles Coburn’s splendid portrayal of the brilliant, kindly but tippling physician. Charley Grapewin, Gene Lockhart, Sterling Holloway and the late Robert McWade cannot be passed up without mention. And
young Gene Reynolds, who plays
Mr. Stewart as a boy, nearly steals the show.
The plot, faken from Honore Morrow’s story, “Benefits Forgot,” centers about an itinerant preacher, his wife and son. Arriving in the {frontier village of Hill Top, O., they find a pious, penurious community, ‘ ‘eager for salvation, but unwilling to pay their spiritual . intercessor [more than enough to keep his body ‘and soul together. ! Young Jason, the son, is deter‘mined to be a doctor. Intelligent and ambitious, he rebels at wearing other children’s cast-off - clothes, ‘scorns his elders’ granite piety. But ‘his father is, beside a zealous preacher, the typically stern parent
,' drama built from logical®
of the period. His Christian char- |
ity is too remote and impersonal to understand his son’s viewpoint.
Goes to Medical School
So indifference grows, and Jason turns to his doting mother for understanding. He grows older, and on the day his father thrashes him —grown man though he js—he takes his mother’s last scrimped dollars and goes to Baltimore and medical school. One by one, the mother sells all her possessions to keep Jason in school. Absorbed and indifferent, the boy takes them for granted. Parson Wilkins falls ill, and Jason
arrives home just as he dies. Unfortunately, the picture dies with him
Jason’s character is switched to conform to the obvious “ungrateful son” pattern. He neglects his mother, goes to the Civil War and gains fame as a surgeon. The mother, thinking him dead, writes to President Lincoln, asking if he can help in finding the grave. Instead, Lincoln finds the boy, calls him to the White House. He lectures him on. filial duty and, while the boy finally is writing to his mother, recites Amiel’s song from Act II of “As You Like It,” whence Miss Morrow got the story’s title. So Jason - hurries home, a chastened youth, and receives his mother’s forgiveness. Despite a weak ending and the fact that John Carradine, the re; formed screen villain, is not a good Lincoln, “Of Human Hearts” is a highly refreshing and satisfying picture. Mr. Huston is at his best as the preacher, and the whole
atmosphere of the frontier village is true in detail and utterly delightful.

Comedy Next On Civic Bill Etcheverry Casts Himself in Novelist Role.
Ex tra-curricular activities of America’s literati will be set up for local scrutiny when the farce comedy, “Goodbye Again,” takes to the Civic Theater stage a week from tonight. This is the play by Allan Scott and George Haight which had
Broadway in stitches five years ago, and which has been collecting its share of laughs in outlying districts ever since. The late Osgood Perkins created the principal character, one of those novelists who supplement their royalty income with lectures, teas and autographs. Alfred Etcheverry, Civic director, has cast himself in the Perkins part for the theater’s seventh production of the season. Opposite him will be Mary Fletcher as the forgotten collegiate love who drops in and starts all the trouble. Miss Fletcher, a Civic alumna, stepped into the part during a visit home between Broadway engagements. This .will be her 22d appearance in Civic productions. She was seen in last year’s “How Beau-|

"You Never Know" Will: Come to English's On May 23. “The Shuberts,” as

John Shubert, the producer, is the son of the veteran “J. J.” and one of the youngest show skippers in the business. Not so long ago, young John decided to have a shot at the type of entertainment that made the Shubert name famous. He got his father’s permission and best wishes—but that was all. *“You Never Know” was put together by a young man on his own. It may be the wrong way to start out, but it looks as if Shubert fils had built himself a hit. The way “You Never Know” has been going over with press and public in Boston, Washington and elsewhere, there seems to be a chance that he can settle down on Broadway next
petition. Young Mr. Shubert’s show has a lot of things to its credit. Among others, there are the deft Clifton Webb, and the decorative trio of Lupe Velez, Libby Holman and Toby Wing. The musical comedy also has tunes by Cole Porter for the stellar foursome to sing. The book—usually the weak sister in such productions—is from P. G. Wodehouse’s “By Candlelight.” You may remember it from the Federal Players’ season at Keith's. John Shubert isn’t the only showminded member of the family, though he’s the only direct descendant. Broadway also is hearing this season from Milton Shubert, a nephew of Lee and “J. J.” Milton is producer of one of the most successful English importations this season, “Bachelor Born.”
