Sixty-four county school pupils, winners in recent contests, are to receive awards at the Southport High School Monday night. Contests were held recently in achievement and composition, safety and oratory. The program is to start at 8 p. m. The Warren Township Band is to play, and James Schockley is to read the invocation. Greetings from the Marion County Parent-Teacher Association are to be presented by Mrs. J. B. Lewis, president. J. Malcolm Dunn, county school superintendent, is to present guests and distribution of awards is to follow. Sheriff Ray is to present winners in the safety contest; C. E. Eash, Warren Central High School principal, oratory winners; and Dr. A. B. Carlile of Butler University achievement winners and the Butler Scholarship winner. The oratorical winners were named Wednesday night at Southport High School. Catherine Wagle of New Augusta was first, Joseph Schlomeyer, Warren Central, second, and Lendell Whitinger of Ben Datis, third. Safety contest winners were Frank Ladg of Mars Hill, Marjorie Burkhart, Glenns Valley, and Betty Dove pf Castleton. The contests were sponsored by the County P.-T. A. in co-operation with Butler University and the Marion County Board of Education.

U. S. COURT STUDIES APPEAL BY C. 1.0.

PHILADELPHIA, Aptil 8 (U. P). —The U. S. Supreme Court of Appeals had under advisement today a suit seeking to curb alleged antilabor activities of Mayor Frank Hague’s Jersey City, N. J., police. Sol D. Kapelson of Newark, N. J., attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and the Workers’ Defense League, charged that the Jersey City police had set them-

selves up as judges of what constituted a “legal labor union” and a “legal strike,” and had employed “deportation proceedings” without giving “offenders” a trial.

BIGGEST APARTMENT PLANNED FOR 12,000

NEW YORK, April 8 (U. P.).— The Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. outlined plans today for the construction of the largest apartment community in the country, a 35-million-dollar development pro-

viding homes for 12,000 to 20,000

families of moderate incomes. The construction contract already has been let, and work on the project, which will provide three years of continuous employment for hundreds, was expected to start within a few weeks. The 120-acre site is in the southeast section of the Bronx, across the Harlem River from Manhattan.

CRICKMORE, PEATS IN COURT TUESDAY

Bondsmen for Harry Peats and Victor Crickmore have been notified to bring them into court Tuesday for formal sentencing, Judge Earl R. Cox of Circuit Court said today. Certification of the Indiana Supreme Court’s refusal to grant a rehearing was received - yesterday. The two men, convicted in the fatal stoning of John Marshall Penny, truck driver, face sentences of two to 21 years for -manslaughter.
