a Work to Be Delayed, but

|

~~ Completion of Project

Is Assured.

The City Plan Commission today had adopted a Works Board resolu= tion for the extension of S. East St. from Sanders St. to Garfield Park. : Commission members explained that the resolution is to insure completion of the propect in the future. The work is to be delayed

because the City does not rish to issue any more bonds at present. A $362982 bond issue widening and paving of i from South St. to Sandefs St. was authorized by City-Council several weeks: ago. : The Zoning Boar yesterday granted four variance uests, denied two and postponed due. Variance requests were g nted to saul Fogle for the operation of a junk and salvage storage business at the northeast corner/of 25th and Yandes Sts; Howard H. Nichols. for the use of his front yard at 3208 E. New York St. to sell lawn furniture; Mrs. Catherine S. Hollett, Mrs. Mary L. Sullivan, Thomas L. Sullivan and Reginald H. Sullivan for the operation of an open air automobile sales lot at the northeast corner of Capitol Ave. and Michigan St., and to L. H. Allender for the conversion of an existing residence into a two-family dwelling at 5731 Beechwood Ave. Variance requests were denied Walter Guy Justus for the erection of a three-family residence at the _ southwest corner of Butler Ave. and E. 10th St. and to Robert C/Hatfield for the erection of a dairy products sales building at the northwest corner of Chester and New York Sts. Both requests were denied on the grounds that the proposed construction would lower property values. A variance request made by Lois P. Cooper for permission to erect a filling station at the northwest corner of Shelby St. and N. Gar- _ field Drive was postponed when J. Frances Ake, 1040 N. Garfield Drive, told tHe Board many of the residents of the area were against it and had not been notified of the hearing.

PARKING RULING MADE BY BOARD

In Future New Firms Qutside Mile Square Must Provide Space.

New husiness buildings that locate outside the mile square in the future must provide their own parking facilities, Val McLeay, Zoning Board secretary, said today. The lack of available parking space along city streets necessitated

the ruling, he said. The Board has no jurisdiction over establishments in the downtown area, which already is zoned for business. Double parking caused by inadequate street space is one of the most frequent traffic violations in the city, according to Lieut. Lawrence McCarty, Police Accident Prevention Bureau. He said over 25 per. cent of all traffic stickers issued are for this offense. “While there is no campaign on at present to remedy the parking; problem, it is: being studied from every angle and measures are to be taken soon to overcome what is rapidly become a traffic hazard,” he added. “The drivers of Indianapolis must be educated and not punished in respect to parking. Laws are only means of promoting courtesy and common sense.” In New York City, Mayor F. H. La Guardia has arranged with downtown garages to accommodate shoppers’ cars at a reasonable sum. In Chicago similar ‘arrangements were made. Cincinnati was another city faced with the problem until many hotels and theaters built their own garages within the buildings. : Chain store systems in many places are building drive-in stores and benefiting by it.

SPAT COSTS RELIEF RECIPIENT $2000

PITTSBURGH, April 5 (U. P).— Albert Jakini was strictly on his good ‘behavior at home today after a little spat with his wife cost him $2000 that he had to repay to the relief board. It seems Jakini was on relief and

he was sitting at home when one word led to another with his wife and finally she ‘said something to the police. As -Jakini tried to explain he and his wife always were kidding around, police got interested in Jakini's coat and in the lining was sewed $2,600. And here * Albert had been on relief all the time. : So the relief board filed charges of false pretense, but Jakini was released yesterday afternoon when he paid $2000 back to the relief board in criminal courts.

AGAINST SALARY SUIT

Representatives from seven St. Joseph County organizations today had asked Governor Townsend and the Attorney General's office to aid them in contesting a suit brought by two former county officials for alleged back salaries totaling about $125,000. Frank Nevins, former St. Joseph County clerk, and Fred Crowe, former auditor, have appealed their: salary claims to the Indiana Supreme Court. : Delegation leaders ‘said they told the Governor the demands of the two former officials “are flagrantly unjust and that the law is definitely on the side of the citizens of St. Joseph County.”

NEW YORK, April 5 (U. P)—A $50,000,008 private housing project,

Rockefeller Jr., was offered to labor leaders and building contractors today but it depended upon negotiation of a permanent peace in the industry. Plans for the project were announced by Mayor LaGuardia at a
