There, three men working seven | ital, the lost prosperity of the city
days a week get out a small newspaper which is sent to more than : 10,000 readers all over the world. It has six pages, five of them printed in Macedonian and .the . other in English. The editor, Luben Dimitroff, says

Greece, Jugo Slavia and Bulgaria know if they are caught with the . baper “the penalty is 10 years imprisonment and severe ‘tortures.” . But’ they are a dogged people, he says. They are constantly on the alert for arrival of the newspaper, * which gets jnto their countries . through strange channels. Sometimes the paper is sent through the , mails wrapped in American news- : papers, sometimes carried over the - borders by friends and tossed from . the window of a speeding train. Once inside, it passes from hand to hand and the shades are drawn while it is read. . ] His Readers Punished To read or possess anything writ- » ten in the Macedonian language, . according to Mr: Dimitroff, is a political offense in those countries. - Especially, he says, is it an offense to read the Macedonian Tribune, his paper. For, his political ideal, and that of the followers of the Macedonian Poitical Organization ®is “a free and independent Macedonian nation.” - .They would create a new country
* in the Balkans for people of Mace-

The statement, credited to Lord Gladstone, Mr. Dimitroff believes has been the touchstone of “Irish faith” to the scattered remnants of "his nation. : Another statesman frequenily quoted by Macedonians is Woodrow Wilson, according to Mr: Dimitroff - Who added he “regrets the 14 points were overlooked in 1919.” “After the Macedonian democracy is established,” Mr. Dimitroff re- . marked, scanning the wall map behind his desk, “the first thing. we

capital of our country would be Salonica, an Aegean seaport now owned by Greece. Every Macedon- + dan cherishes the great hope that in the future, when Macedonia will be

will return and the commerce of all Macedonia will be stimulated.” He said this “great hope” has existed as a ‘political movement for 45 years, dating back to the time when all Macedonia was part of the Turkish Empire before the World War. But the movement was not organized in erica until after the war. At thdt time there occurred a mass exodus of Macedonians from the Balkans to every part of the world. In the United States, he said the Macedonian population has concentrated in Detroit, but the largest
settlement on the North American continent is Toronto, where 7000 of

Marinoff and his son, Lambo, who made their home in the little Grecian city of Mokreni, have been whisked away by the authorities to a secret prison somewhere in the isles of the Aegean Sea. This was learned from a letter I recently received second hand. Mr. Marinoff was the caretaker of a small country church and was indiscreet enough
