Dr. Patrick H. V ‘eeks, Indiana State Prison physician and psychia-

is, in the main, a colizction of narratives of men he has known in prison.

when he got a parole he actually went back into society ' in: abject terror and soon Hoo returned to prison. One old man who ‘had not seen outside the prison walls for 22 years provides the author with one story. Dr. Weeks said he arranged to take the man on & short mission outside tHe walls—cne lasting only a few hours, When this old » nan again saw trees and the horizen and grass, he was speechless witl. the joy of it, Dr. Weeks said, anc for years afterward would talk in wonderment of those few moments outside the prison walls. One chapter is de voted to the rise and fall of the Dillingér gang, some

of whom Dr. Weeks said he knew|

well in prison. Dillinger himself, he said, was so inconspicuous while in prison that guards hardly could

recall him after he became’ no-

torious. "Tobacco Is Treasured He tells, also, <f the speed and

accuracy with- which prisoners, sup-

posedly cut: off ‘rom the outside world, learn of events, even to which horse won what : race at what park. Tobacco, he. saic/, is the prisoners’ currency, and sore shrewd traders are able to hoard astonishing num-
