“Good Music” by i James Thrasher |
The New York PhilharmonicSymphony Orchestra, as you doubtless know by now, is announcing the first performance of . Two Scenes from Deems Taylor's “Peter Ibbetson” tonight, and the music’s first broadcast tomorrow. ‘This is the same arrangement played for the first time a week ago by the {Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. C
Tha problem of two world pre-
| mieres is of astrpnomical propor-
tions. Yet there seems no simpler solution at present. Fabien Sevitzky, the Indianapolis orchestra’s conductor, has received conflicting’ reports from the New York front. One is from George Fischer, president of J. Fischer & Bro. which published the Taylor music. The other is from the Philharmonic. Symphony management.
Mr. Fischer's letter states that telegram from the local ran office brought him the first information that notice had _appeared “in the New York Times and elsewhere” announcing a t per= formance and first broadcast at the New York orchestra's week-end concerts, He said he had informed
‘| the _ Philharmonic-Symphony that
they would be safe in saying that this was a “first New York perform. ance.” Taylor Is Silent
Mr. Taylor himself supplied the information concerning his music to
| Lawrence Gilman, program annota-
tor, the New York orchestra’s letter And an inclosed Philhar-monic-Symphony program for Saturday night announces that this will be the first performance of the “Peter Ibbetson” excerpts.
So there yofi have it. Meanwhile no word has come from the compe Wiough oe Indianapolis ony sen an in telegram last Tuesday. ng Of course, this occurrence is no world-shaking event in musical his. tory. Neither, for that matter, is the Taylor Suite. The whol thing probably is just one of thosé tem‘Peramental vagaries in which musie abounds. But Mr. Taylor, from this vantage point, looks considerably more foolish than Mr. Sevitzky and hig orchestra—who, after all, did play it first. ” » ® =
Now we may proceed with the day’s business. The Philharmonic Symphony also will play the Over~ ture to Schubert's “Rosamunde,” Brahms’ Second Symphony and the Schumann Cello Concerto, with Gregor Piatigorsky as soloist. John Barbirolli will conduct the brodcast, which i fenains " 2 p. m. on CBS».
There will be two, maybe more, new singers on the Metropolitan Opera roster at 4:30 p. m. tomor= row. Winners of the Metropolitan Auditions series will be selected from six semifinalists: Kathlesn Kirsting and Margaret Codd, so"pranos; Leonard Warren and Phil Duey, baritcnes, and Felix Knight and John Carter, tenors. The ‘broadcast will begin at 4 p. m. on NBO-Blue stations. ox Ammold Eidus, boy violinist, and ‘Leonard Warren, baritone, will be semifinal competitors for the $1000 “Rising Musical Star” awards on NBC-Red at 9 p. m. tomorrow. Two other’ competitors will be heard next: week, and the final announcement is slated for April 10. ® 8 s Tonight's orchestra programs will be by the NBC ‘and Chicago Symphonies. Dr. Howard Hanson will be guest. conductor with the NBO orchestra. The program will ine clude an uncontested “world pre miere” of Dr. Hanson’s Third Symphony; Locatelli’s Cohcerto Grosso for two string orchestras; the cone ductor’s arrangement of the Overe ture land Incidental Music to Purcell's “Diocletian,” and MacDowell’s second “Indian Suite.” WIRE is to
| pick up this NBC broadcast at. 9:30
