The star is Bette is. Advance publicity on the ‘ure describes the heroine as ‘a biled, heartless . and beautiful 1's,” which is a characterization it down Miss Davis’ alley.
Started Out Sweet
would not be fair to apply any ‘he above adjectives except the s° one to Miss Davis in real life. between flights of screen temsment, she has been known to sy in trim with a little figurative ir-pulling in the front office. ne wouldn’t know this tempestublond star for the little girl + came out to Hollywood a few ‘s ago. Previously she had won : cnolorship in John Murray Anon’s drama. school. After some +4 sledding Broadway began to tice her in such plays as “Broken 1es.” So did a Universal scout. sllowed Miss Davis’ trek to the :t Coast. She was cast in some unger sister” and wall flower ~5. Miss Davis felt she wasn’t ing so good, and the studio knew Jer bosses scarcely could wait til the option was up to tell her bye. George Arliss Saved Her
» the farewells were said, and the Davis’ trunks were packed for a rzturn to New Yprk. Just then, however, George Arliss took a look at iss Davis’ test for the:ingenue par: in his “The Man Who Played God.” That's how the nice little girl who didn't have what the movies needed moved over to the Warner headquarters. And there she has remained, except for an excursion to R-K-O for her brillian’ performance in “Of Human Bondage.” Miss Davis’ spitfire activity began witly the share-cropper melodrama, “Cabin in the Cotton,” opposite Richard Barthelmess. She was a mezn, cantankerous Southern gal in that one, but she has grown steadily more menacing in “Dangerous,” “Marked Woman,” “That Cerain Woman” and all the rest. When the star patched up her contract troubles, she said, among other things, “I've heen a brat, and probably shall again, frequently.” She has—the casting director has seen to that. Miss Davis has two leading men in her present opus. They are Henry Fonda and George Brent, anc both fall under the siren’s spell before the picture is through. The supporting cast includes such well-known players as Margaret Lincsay, Donald Crisp, Fay Bainen har Cromwell- and Henry

Star Finally - Goes on-Job
Studio Pays Her $18.75 A Minute, Husband
Paces Floor.
HOLLYWOOD, March 24 (U. P), —Miss Danielle Darrieux, whose salary is three times that of President Roosevelt, got her chance today to
prove that she’s worth the money. When the 21-year-old actress are rived here from France last October under a five-year contract, her salary began immediately at the rate of more than $4000 a week. While she polished her fing and otherwise kept herself gmused in her rented Bel-Air home, the authors began to pound their typewriters. They were told that the
ails
quicker they wrote a scenario for
her, the longer their jobs would last. Finally the writers came up with a rough draft of a story called “The Rage of Paris.” It looked all right. Studio chieftains, with an eye on those Saturday night checks, said “Go.” Miss Darrieux went before the cameras yesterday, while the writers upstairs sent down the script, page by page. The story has her a French show girl, stranded in New York and looking for a job as a model. She
.thinks she has employment posing
for an artist, but she gets the wrong address and goes to the office of an advertising agent, where immediate« ly she strips for work. The agent is Douglas ‘Fairbanks Jr, and he thinks she isn’t nice (that’s the way Hollywood puts it.) A lot of other things happen. Mr. © Fairbanks changes his mind and marries her, Only one man on the stage ige nored her. He paced the floor with his hands behind his back. His name was Henry Decoin, e 1s her husband. Then the ca s stopped and she put on a blue dressing gown. She said she felt nervous, but Director Henry Koster yelled for her to start the next scene. Nobody could blame him. Every minute counted, at a rate of $18.75 per.
