Federal Court ~ Sentences 20, Sets Trial Dates For 14 Others.

Two Indianapolis men, convicted ‘or sale of marijuana cigarets here, were taken to Federal Reformatory #t Chillicothe, O., today following arraignment before District Judge 12obert C. Baltzell. Charles Denton and William H. Harvey were sentenced to 18 months ind a year ang a day, respectively,

he cigarets. They were among 20 who were sntenced yesterday. . Judge -Baltzell postponed sentencing of 39 others znd set trial dates for ‘14 who centered pleas of not guilty. At the same time, four others were sentenced for participation in z ring which allegedly sold heroin. “William K. Higgins is fo serve a five-year sentence. His wife, Mary, end William Johnson are to serve to ‘0 years. Edward Lynn was sentenced to 18 months for alleged purcase and concealment of heroin.

Judge Baltzell deferred sentencing of Sam Bohard, who pleaded giilty to mail theft from North Side apartment house boxes, pendinz investigation by Adolph Kruse, U. 8S. Probation Officer. Trial of James O. Roark and Jcseph C. Ferguson, both charged w h violation of the White Slave Traffic Act; was set for May 6 before Judge Baltzell. - Three men charged with passing counterfeit coins entered pleas of guilty, but sentencing was deferred pending investigation by Mr. Kruse. They are Fred Frosch, Basil Longest and William Albright. Joe L. Hoffman, Studebaker Corp. president, was $5000 richer-today for having devoted “many years of service to the cause of street and highway traffic safety.” Mr. Hoffman received the C.-I. T. Safety Foundation’s annual grand award last night for leadership in traffic safety during 1937. Other awards were given for educational motion picture, radio broadcasts and newspaper campaigns. The foundation was established in 1936.
