Smart Women Wearing Hair High Upon Head

By ALICIA HART A famous couturier who visited this country recently declared coiffures are the focal point of attention these days. The fact that more and more smart women are wearing their hair off the neck and high on the head means that fashions in clothes and makeup will change noticeably within the next few months, he thinks.

“I hear ever so many women say that they will never adopt higher, shorter hair styles,” the Paris designer went on, “But they will. No fashion-minded woman can resist trying any new style that is being talked about in smart circles. If she tries one of the new coiffures, more than likely she’ll stick to it. If she does, it means that she’ll start wearing even more feminine clothes, affecting pink and white, delicate makeup.” It is, of course, important that you study your face and neck from all angles before you decide to brush your hair upward. If you have a long face and a long neck; you will want to break the hard line of your jaw. with curls or ringlets or some bit of fluffiness, placed low behind ears. The hairdresser who can help you to decide on a coiffure which is new but who knows how to vary it a little to suit your particular type is the one to seek out. A truly chic woman never adopts wholeheartedly. a new style unless it happens to suit her. She strives for a variation that will be in keeping with the new mode, yet eminently flattering to her. The girl who goes south for a vacation ought to . take along plenty of suntan lotions and creams to keep her skin from becoming too brown. If ultra feminine clothes are to dominate the spring fashion picture, she won’t want to jein the Easter parade with skin that looks weatherbeaten or even tomboyishly

having a beautiful garden, but un= less you know something about the requirements of plants all’ your dreams will result in disappointments. You may be an amateur gardener with a number of years experience or you may be just starting your first garden this spring. In either case begin your spring activity on a few sound facts. It is not difficult to learn about soils, fertilizers, insects, and pests. A few simple rules learned in the beginning will save many a heartache later on.

Water Always Available

air, and soil with plant food in it. Sunshine and air are supplied us. If not enough water comes to us we can always use the hose. gardener’s job is to get the earth into proper condition. Most trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass grow best in a neutral or alkaline soil. Only a few varieties of plants need an acid condition. How can we tell what kind of soil we have? Buy at any drugstore 10 cents worth. of litmus paper, take a cupful of the soil, add water, and if a blue litmus paper turns red the soil is acid. If it stays blue it is oni the alkaline side. In order to make an acid soil ‘sweet” or alkaline, first get air into the soil by adding sifted coal ashes, cinders, strawy manure, agricultural slag from blast furnaces, or agricultural lime.

Soil Must Have Drainage

Soil must also have drainage for taking away excess water. Plants cannot get food from waterlogged earth. The. soil may be clay or sand and in either case it must contain humus to supply plant food. Humus is decayed vegetable matter. Soil from the top of the ground where vegetables or farm crops have been raised contains humus and is called topsoil.
