NS, CARAWAY FAGES BIG FIGHT FOR RE-ELECTION

Arkansas Senator Expected

To Meet Opposition From Governor Bailey.

By THOMAS L. STOKES Times Special Writer . LITTLE ROCK, Ark, Marci 23. —This state is about to decide whether woman shall remain a fixture in that historic men’s club, the United States Senate. Senator Caraway must face the voters in the Aug. 9 primary. She started her national political career with a complimentary appointraent to the seat long occupied by her husband, the late Thad Caraway, whose tart tongue often made His colleagues shiver. Huey Long later sound-trucked and callioped the Widow Caraway —*“This little woman,” as he called her—in victory for the regular six-yesr term in one of those sideshow campaigns which now appear to have disappeared from American politics. The betting was. 15 to 1 against Mrs. Caraway until Huey entered the state and put on a six-day show that covered all of Arkansas. She was going to help him make “every man a king,” he told the Arkansans. All she did was sit on the platform and smile pleasantly.

Opponents Snowed Under

Huey shamed the voters, they snowed under Mrs. Caraway’s six male. opponents—and. some have stayed snowed under until this day. But the woman Senator now mus stand alone in her own right and on her record as a Senator. - Not entirely alone, though. Still hovering over Arkansas is the spectral figure of another statesman, one whom Huey often baited in the Senate—ihe late Joseph T. Robin-

son, onctime Democratic leader of |:

the Senate. Joe Robinson left a large popular following in Arkansas on which Mrs. Caraway and her lieutenants will seek to capitalize. He lef? u machine which was nourished during his regime by the patronage and favors he was able dispense as President Roosevelv's strong right arm. Mrs. Caraway has continued this nurturing by various processes, not least of which is the answering of every letter from every constituent. This job is carefully attended to by her very able secretary. Garrett Whiteside. It. is said about Arkansas that WPA is the State’s biggest industry. And Mrs. Caraway has had her fingers in that institution, as have other Senators. It is powerful politically. F2deral jobholders of other kinds in Arkansas also are beholden to her.

McClellan Opposes Her

Rep. John L. McClellan already has entered the lists against her and reporis are that two other Congressmen—David Dickson Terry and Claucz ‘A. Fuller--may announce soon. Too many male cooks may spoil the anti-Caraway broth. If the files: becornies cluttered up. Mrs. Caraway, with her control of the Federal paironage machine, may best her male opponents again. Another source of confusion is the lack of issues. Mrs. Caraway has voted with the New Deal pretty regularly. True, she voted =zainst President Roosevelt’s wage-hour bill, but so did her opponents. Just now it seems the main allegztion against her will be that she is a “nonentity* in the Senate.
