New High in Popularity

By TOM KENNEDY | During the past ‘winter there was undoubtedly a revival of interest in many sections in indoor track

meets. This particularly was true in the East and there is little doubt

3 4 | put that the feats of the great 43 | Glenn Cunningham had much to

do with this enthusiasm. It is possible, though, to conduct a large track meet successfully without the services of the peerless miler from Kansas, This was amply demonstrated at Butler Fieldhouse Saturday night when an estimated 8000 turned out to view the sixth annual running of the Butler relays. For some time those sponsoring the local track carnival have billed it as-the greatest in the Midwest. We think this description justified and entirely accurate. In time it ought to-be the finest athletic event

’ of its kind in the country.

Saturday night's offering was pack-jammed with color, glamour and thrills and the various events

5 held the interest of the big crowd

for more than three solid hours. Three new relay records were established and a world record, that in the 60-yard high hurdles, was equalled. That's sufficient tipoff on the high quality of the entertainment. Most spectators, too, were im-

| pressed by the speed and efficiency

with which the 15-event program was run off. There was no waiting, or at least very little of it, and the entire affair showed that much capable thought and considerable time had gone into its preparation. For this, undoubtedly, youthful |g; Larry Holmes, Butler coach, who was relays “director, and Tony Hinkle, athletics director, are largely responsible.

Capable Butler Team Right here we would like to com-

s¢ | ment on the excellent showing of

the Butler track team. They finished on top in the college division and their performance generally was of very high calibre. ‘We performances of Bill Southworth in the relay events. How Larry managed to bring his team up to such perfection, burdened as he-muist have been with preparations for the carnival itself, must be classed as something of a mystery. No account of the relays of course would be complete without mention of the part played by Miss Betty Wangelin, the relays queen, and her court of honor. She presided at the victory ceremonies and it must have added considerably to the happiness of the occasion for the various win-~ ners to have been rewarded with

their medals at her hands. These|

proceedings added a very nice touch indeed to the galety of the occasion.

Don Lash Was There

statistics it might be recalled that honors in the university division again were carried off by Michigan. Demonstrating. strength in practic~ ally : every event the Wolverines piled up a commanding total of 40%

points against the 291 for Indiana

which again demonstrated its ability

to turn out super-excellent . performers over the distance route. Anyway, the track meet’s the thing and in the Butler indoor relays Incdianapolis really has something and there’s not much doubt but that they will become a .permanent and welcome fixture on our major sports program. The summaries:
