Slightly more than 20 per cent of the funds “listributed to dependent children, the aged, and the blind since passage of the Indiana Welfare Act in March, 1936, has been raised by. local tax levies, Thurman A. Gottschalk, State Welfare Ad ainistrator, reported today. : “Almost 80 per cent of public assistance cllowances represents . new money coming into the counties,”; Mr. Goisschalk said. “On the whole, State =nd County public aid programs are financed 45 per cent by Federal, 22 by state, and 21 by local county ‘unds.”

MICHIGAN APPROVES INDIANA BEER TRUGE

LANSING, Mich. March 18. (U. P.).—The State Liquor Control a year’s moratorium -on a ban. of Indiana

beer was on record today. The truce provides that Indiana shall charge no fees on Michigan beer except an excise tax of $1.03 a barrel. The action was ratified officially yesterday. : Michigan, However, still holds the “whip hand,” for it can invoke-the ban immediately if the agreement is broken. The ban was to have begun March 14, the same date Indiana was to have embargoed all Michigan alcoholic products.

Legislature May Study State Liquor Setup

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission’s approval of a year’s moratorium: completes adjustment of a threatened “beer embargo war” between the states. The Indiana Legislature will have convened before the Michigan moratorium expires. Amendments to the Indiana liquor laws, including abolition of the port-of-entry system, may be considered at the session.

Henry A. Noelke, convicted in Evansville of murdering his wife and child in an argument over going to a circus, today asked the Indiana Supreme Court for a stay of execution, set for April 13, while he completed an appeal from the conviction.
