PAGE § Minevich’s Rascals on Lyric Stage
Harmonica Group Won Fame With Lopez Act And In Europe.
Centuries ago Greek actors used to wear appropriate masks for their performances in tragedy or comedy. And Borrah Minevich, who brings
his Harmonica Rascals to the Lyric H stage tomorrow, uses a somewhat||
similar scheme .in his appearances as serious or frivolous musician. Everyone should remember the smiling and frowning Greek masks, for every self-respecting “opera house” of a few years ago depicted them on its curtain. Mr. Minevich’s system is not so familiar, but just as effective. Instead of doing it with masks, he did it with whiskers. A few seasons back Mr. Minevich got an engagement © play in the sacred precincts f London's Queen’s Hall. Here was a problem: Wouldn't everyone laugh at this veteran vaudevillian, who was known in England’s music halls as well as the American circuits?
He Dons A Beard
Well, Mr. Minevich had an inspiration. He knew that, even in London, a beard is a rather impressive thing. So he grew one. What’s more, he donned a cutaway coat and striped trousers. And London took him seriously. This wasn’t the mouth-organ maestro’s first experience in a hallowed musical shrine. The fact is, he and his “Rascals” started at
the top and worked down until, to-|:
day, they are said to be the highest -paid and best known harmonica ensemble in the business. The group’s debut took place in the Metropolitan Opera House, no less. That was at a jazz concert given by Vincent Lopez a few years ago. Since then the act has toured this country and Europe, appeared on several nationwide network programs, made some movie shorts and has been featured in two feature length pictures, Sonja Henie’s “One in a Million” and “Love Under Fire.” First Appearance Here The Lyric engagement will be the Minevich ensemble’s first Indianapolis appearance. On the same bill arz booked Sully and Thomas, a comedy team; Tito Coral, baritone star of several Ziegfeld and Shubert revues; Audrey Dempsey, dancer, and a chorus. The Lyric’s picture will be “Walking Down Broadway,” which has the distinction of starting in where a multitude of our movie musicals leave off. The picture opens on the closing night of a successful Broadway revue. So if you have wondered what happens to all our screen heroes and heroines after the curtain falls on a triumphant first night, thiS may be the place to find out. Featured in the cast or Claire Trevor, Michael Whalen, Phyllis Brooks, Leah Ray and Dixie Dunbar. J.T
