Dull Monotony
of Rotting
Offset by Laughter, Hobbies
By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON « Everyone in the world except the hermit and the philosopher gets * sick and tired of routine. Of course there are phlegmatic people without imagination who live to be a hundred without varying the daily program by oneinch, but the rank and file of us are made of different dust. We crave, and we need, change of some sort.
Now children do very well in reg-¢-ular routine as a rule. They are ~not less restless, but everything is news to them. Their senses are being fed by things that seem commonplace to us, because every man - sawing wood, or mixing concrete, is an adventure for a boy, and pulling taffy is thrill for a girl. However, families get into ruts. They always-do. Order, regularity and system—these often become the household gods of existence. The children find nothing perchance, to interest them, either inside the schoolroom or .out. Home is just the same old furniture in the same old place, and the same cered] and potatoes. Common Interest Lacking
Mother gets blue; father wearing a path between office and house gets stale, and finds his needed Shri in kicking stools out of the way and saying: “I hate rice pudding.” The children with only one thought, movies, decide that life at home is a bore. Each is working in his own ‘world. House work is unrelated to blue prints; and spelling is not even step-cousin to ironing, so here we have the family, not, only losing interest in the house, but in each other. Formerly, father was worrying about crops, mother about canning the fruit and bakifg with the flour that father raised, and the children were chopping wood to cook them with. - Father milked, mother churned end the children had to carry the butter and eggs they gathered to the store to exchange for sugar and Ro whole family had a common jnterest in co-operation, for their existence depended on communal edort. Nothing takes its place today in oir urban homes. And parents have failed to see the danger of disinte‘gration. All the thrills lie outside ‘the e. : Yet the home can be the happiest, Jolliest place imaginable, if a ‘common interest for all is provided. Yhat kind of interest? asks the skeptical mother. .
Laughter and Fun First of all, fun. Humor and
_leughter are medicines for the soul.
Second, a hobby that the whole fomily will work for. Anything from bugs to a painting class. Books are fine, but watch your boy or he will, be bored unless you read together an adventure story to hold
maybe. by a little sugar at
in the parlor m it occurs to you. Yearn to surprise each other and fill the children with a consuming curiosity about the hours after supper. Turn off the radio. Forget movies once in a while. Tempers will improve. Children will help more. Lessons will be attended to without stalling, in order to get at the riddles, the guessing games or ship modeling. ‘ It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as it is absorbing. And let the children do their share.
