HARDWOOD hysteria broke out all over the Hoosier State last night as the annual high school tournament eliminations got under way and today a large group of teams said farewell ‘til next year. . . . The losers in the first night of action retire gracefully, accept with thanks the customary pat on the back and “You played a great
game, boy, even if you did lose.” The winners, of course, are the idols of the cities and towns which they represent, but it’s tough to continue on the path of glory since there is so much luck connected with basketball that a first flight squad may have an off game in shooting while a weaker opponent strikes a hot streak and hits the hoop from all angles. # ® 8 8 . EJ # THE pressure in this tournament business is always on the leading quintets whose followers become overconfident and build too many castles in the air before the games are played. . . . The athletes try hard to remain in stride and win one game at a time, but at the first sign of a cold streak on basket making they are likely to crack, fumble their assignments and fall victims’ to Mr. John Upset before the slump ends. At any rate, 723 teams will have dropped by the wayside at the conclusion of sectional play tomorrow night and the 64 survivors will live out another week of fame at its utmost in the Hoosier basketball realm. . . . JAnd 64 coaches will spend restless nights, pick at their food as appetites fail and wonder whether it’s worth the price to direct a winner. . . . Especially in the cities where the residents live and eat basketball and let the rest of the
world go bye, bye. 2 8 8 8 & 8
OACHES of teams which lost close tilts last night are looking for the nearest doghouse for shelter until an aroused citizenry recovers from the frenzy and begins to realize that it won't make any difference a hundred years from now. The basketball kennels will be evacuated by Saturday March 12 only to receive a fresh batch of refugees that night as the losing coaches in the regional play run to cover and give tlifanks that they had the foresight to listen to the insurance man, the grocery man and the coal man to forestall any suffering around the home fireside while they disappear for a “much-needed vacation” in Fido’s little haven. Proving again that a man’s best friend is his dog, which fortunately knows nothing about hardwood hysteria and thinks a basketball is just something to sniff at and push around to see how far it will roll into the newly spaded garden.

ND so it goes, through semifinals and finals with surviving coaches growing haggard and losing mentors thinking how carefree life would be had Doc Naismith spent his early days in the culinary department of good old Springfield “Y” College inventing a new strawberry shortcake recipe instead of hanging a peach basket on the wall for the “Y” boys to shoot at. Hoop rolling is better for the legs, anyway, losing hardwood coaches aver, and especially was this so, they point out, in Doc Naismith’s days at Springfield when a good hoop roller speeding down the block brought admiring “glances from the sorority sisters, if Springfield had any sorority sisters, because it was years later before the Betty Co-eds of the land ventured into gymnasiums to watch the boys in shorts throw at a hoop instead of rolling it.

Pons winds ’er up tonight at Illinois and Purdue’s Big Ten leaders close the campaign at Northwestern tomorrow . . . Indiana and Illinois are closing disastrous seasons, although both lost some tough ones and seldom were far behind at the final gun. . . . A few breaks here and there would have made a big difference. Purdue has played up to expectations and Northwestern came through far better than the advance dope indicated. Valparaiso, Indiana College Conference champion played St: Viator at Kankakee last night and Notre Dame entertains the stalwart Marquette University five tonight, one of the few teams holding a victory over the Irish. ... Concordia of Ft. Wayne tackles Tri State at Angola tomorrow, which will ‘conclude all Hoosler college schedules except two, Notre Dame and Valparaiso.
Andres Crippled as I. U. Faces Illinois
BLOOMINGTON, March 4.—Indiana University’s crippled basketball team will wind up its Big Ten schedule tonight at Illinois, meeting the Illini in a return game. Indiana won the earlier encounter 51-46 in an overtime battle. Added woe was registered in the Hoosier camp when it was learned that Ernié Andres, guard, may be unable to start against Illinois, Andres is suffering from a severe charley horse and cold, but may see part-time service. Roger Ratliff likely will draw the starting assignment at center, with Marvin Huffman shifting to guard to bolster the defensive. Clarence Ooley probably will start in Andres’ place. Bill Johnson and Jay McCreary will be the starting forwards.
Capt. Joe Platt, forward, will be
unable. to make the trip, as he has not yet recovered from an attack of the flu.

Modern Athlete Called Smarter

EAST LANSING, March 4 (NEA). —Jack Heppinstall, trainer of athletes at Michigan State, who has been plying his trade for nearly a quarter of a century, doesn’t agree with those who say the present generation is softer than the old-time athlete. “They're not softer . . . they're merely smarter,” Heppinstall said.

So we de honor to both with our new “Fiddle Bottle,” | For 118 years the limestone water of our Bowbon Springs bas been widely known for the distinctive character it gives to whisky. Today, with this seemingly magical water and selected grains, we make whisky by the same slow Sour Mash method our fathers used... and mature it in Nature's own way - | —in heavily charred new white oak barrels. The result is a full-bodied drinking whisky, smooth and | mellow. You'll like our BARD'S TOWN and BOURBON SPRINCS Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky. Kansan an Clips Two Seconds
Runs Mile in Amazing Time Of 4:04.4 on New Track At Dartmouth.
HANOVER, N. H., March 4 (U. P.).—A soft spoken Midwesterner, who sbme 20 years ago was carried from a burning Kansas schoolhousé and told that he would never walk again, was hailed today as the greatest mile runner in the history of competitive sports. 3 He is Glenn Cunningham. Driving around the fast Dartmouth track last night he clipped two full seconds from Sydney Woodersen’s world’s record mark of 4:06.4 for the mile. The remarkable performance also took four seconds off his own
indoor mile. It was Cunningham’s supreme effort, an ultimate defiant challenge to the fates which had once cas! him as a cripple to limp through life on flame-seared legs. His tri-
-lumph was all the sweeter because
\he had worked so hard to achieve it. The several thousand fans who cheered him through the recordsmashing performance last night will remember it as one of the greatest thrills in sports. Every= oy possible had been done to aid the stout-heartéd Kansan in reaching his goal. The Dartmouth board track, now universally recognized as the fastest in the world; the Daitmouth milers, who were handicapped to assist
and.the great amount of heat in the gymnasium all contributed to Cuningham’s success, but after all, it was the great fighting heart of the barrel-chested runner that smashed the record. Never Felt Better
Cunningham said he was never in better shape during his running career. He had smashed the world’s 1500-meter record in New York five days before and was in such excellent physical condition that he was satisfied to hold his form. He had done no. practicing for several weeks and ‘did none until an hour before the race.
the gun did not go off but it was only a few moments before the field was away. When the first quarter was announced at 58.5, the crowd of several thousand students and townspeople roared their approval. The cheers of the throng grew louder at 2:025 was announced at the half-mile post. The threequarters clocking was given out as 3:042 just as Cunningham came driving down the straightaway to
start the final lap.
