(Editorial, Page 14)
The 1938 Marion County traffic toll today had risen to 20 with the death of Joseph Chapman, 60, former Technical High School draftsmanship instructor. Four others were injured, two seriously. Many of the arrests resulted from the order of Lieut. Lawrence McCarty, head of the Accident Prevention Bureau, to keep close watch on 17 intersections, at each of which six or more accidents have occurred in the last 14 months. The intersections: State Ave. and Washington st., Delaware and St. Clair Sts., New Jersey and St. Clair Sts., Massa=husetts Ave. and Noble St., Emerson Ave. and Washington St., Belmont Ave. and Washington St., Warman Ave. and Washington St, White River Blvd. and Michigan St., Founfain Square, Belt Railway and Shelby St., 38th St. and Boulevard Pl, 22d and Meridian Sts. 25th St. and Central Ave. 21st and Illinois Sts., 16th St. and Northwestern Ave., 16th and Illinois Sts. and 16th and Meridian Sts.
No Gadget Arrests
No arrests were made for driving with 1937 license plates or failure to have windshield title holders. Federal Judge Robert C. Baltzell Yesterday set March 16, 17 or 18 as date for a three-judge hearing on a temporary injunction against enforcement of the title holder law. Mr. Chapman, en route home from his second day of work on a WPA job, was killed instantly late yesterday when he fell from his bicycle into the path of an auto on Millersville Road, one-half mile east of the city limits. The car was being driven by Mrs. Mabel V. Hunter, R. R. 15, Box 104. Deputy sheriffs were informed that Mr. Chapman had started work Tuesday on a WPA projeet at Fall Creek Boulevard at Millersville Road, the first work he had had in more than a month. Half a mile from the project, on his way home, he was overtaken by a truck carrying six fellow-workers. He waved at them as the truck passed, then swung back toward the center of the road, but fell across the center line deputies were told, directly in the path of Mrs. Hunter’s car. Mr. Chapman’s body and the bicycle were dragged about 10 feet. He is survived by his wife, a son, Adolph, and two daughters.
Woman Hurt in Crash
Miss: Connie Martin, whose address was not learned by deputy sheriffs, was injured early today when the auto of Gen. William K. Naylor, Ft. Benjamin Harrison commandant, driven by Private Melvin Lewis, the General's chauffeur, crashed against an abutment on U. S. 40 at Lick Creek Bridge. Private Lewis told deputy sheriffs he borrowed the General's car late yesterday, met Miss Martin and drove to Cumberland shortly after midnight for a lunch. On their return the car was forced off the road by an approaching auto. Theodore Vaughn, 19, of 755 Lexington Ave., received a fracture of the right leg when he rode his bicycle into the path of a car driven by Vernon Stuvel, 409 N. Dearborn St., at E. Michigan and Arsenal Ave. Robert Hendricks, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hendricks, 3108 English Ave., was cut on the face when his father’s car collided with another auto at Iowa and Delaware Sts. He was treated at City Hospital. Carl Antrobus, 28, of 2242 S. Pennsylvania St. driver of the other car, was arrested for failure to carry a driving license.
