a "TOWNSEND SAYS SECURITY IS AIM FOR DEMOCRATS

Governor Urges Stabilizing Of Working Man Wage On Yearly Basis.:

Times Special SOUTH BEND, March 2.—Eco-

nomic security for all is “the battle | :

cry of modern democracy,” Governor Townsend had declared today in defense of New Deal policies. Speaking here last night at a Democratic banquet, the Governor said the Roosevelt Administration is attempting to provide this security and to level out the “peaks and valleys of American economic life.”

Refers to VanNuys

In a radio interview preceding the address, the Governor referred briefly to Senator VanNuys’ announced campaign for re-election,

saying: “Any political servant has the right to leave his party if he no longer agrees with its ideals and principles. The Democrats of Indiana in the last convention swore alJlegiance to the principles and leadership of the New Deal and President Roosevelt. Those who have attacked and bitterly fought this program turned their backs on a trust the public placed in the party.” More than 1000 Democrats attended the banquet. After pointing out that argriculture and the Government now are working together to stabilize farm prices, the Governor declared the consuming public, business and ‘labor should work with government in the same manner to stabilize prices. * “In Indiana the State government stands behind the President, and I . promise you we will not let the peo- * ple down,” he said.

Urges Yearly Pay Scales

+ “We have gone a long way toward Becurity, but the war against suffering, want and exploitation cannot . cease. Enemies of the people have retreated, but they have not surrendered. “The peaks and valleys will never be levelled out entirely until the working man has a steadier income. We must start thinking in terms of yearly wage scales instead of weekly or monthly rates. “If the income and job security of the working man were spread over an annual period, purchasing power would be steadied and indus-. try could meet the people’s needs,” Governor Townsend said.
