TRUCK SIGNAL LAW ATTACKED ONL. (. C. BASIS

Operators [Iso Declare Act Violates 1935 U. S. Motor Carrier Legislation.

Winder & Sons, Inc., and 21

other truck operators opposing en-|

forcement of the Indiana directional signal law today had filled an amended complaint to answer obJections to their original suit in Superior Court 2 A demurrer to, the original complaint was filed by the State several weeks ago and was sustained by the Court. The amended complaint declares the signal law unlawfully delegates authority. It charges the law violates the 1935 U. S. Motor Carrier Act, and that the Interstate Commerce Commission ddes not require such signals, and asks a restraining order against the act’s enforcement pending final adjudication. Exemptions Made . Meanwhile, State Safety Director Donald F. Sfiver said the State Safety Committee previously had decided the law would not be enforced against contract or common carriers engaged in interstate hauling and registered with the I. C. C. His statement followed an opinion by the I. C. C. that trucks engaged wholly in interstate and: foreign commerce arc not required to use mechanical directional signals. . Mr. Stiver said the committee’s decision was temporary, and that it had not committed itself to any definite policy. He added that the law would be enforced against private carriers engaged in interstate transportation. The I. C. C. opinion was received by the Indiana Regulated Highway Carriers, Inc., whose officials declared that new litigation against the Indiana law is contemplated.

STATE POLICE OCCUPY NEW AREA BARRACKS

Anderson District Structure Fifth in Program.

State Police of the Anderson district today occupied their new $30,000 barracks at the intersection of Routes 9 anc 67, opposite the Indiana Reformstory. The building includes a jail, broadcasting room, six-car garage, sleeping quarters and rifle range. It is the fifth new structure into which State Police recently have moved. Other new barracks are at Seymour, Jasper, Putriamville and Michigan City. Former dwellings had been used as barracks at each place.

180 MARION WORKERS END 10-WEEK STRIKE

About 180 =mployees of the Indiana Fiber >roducts Co. Marion, had returne! to work today after a 10-week st: ike. Robert H. Cowdrill, regional NL:.B member, announced here a settle nent of differences. He said th: management signed a memorandur: of understanding with the State Labor Division, agreeing to ‘ulfill terms of a pact which the workers claimed had been broken. Mr. Cowd: ill said the strike was called by the International Brotherhod of Pulp. Sulphite & Paper Mill Workers on a claim the company had discharged union men and hired others in their places. The union is to be the sole bargaining agency. The memorandum also provides seniority rights and the present wage scale.
