FURTHER AUTO SALARY CUTS UNCONFIRMED

General Motors Reductions Affect 40,000, Total Eight Million.

- DETROIT, Feb. 26 (U.P.).—Most automobile industry officials believed today that salary reductions announced by General Motors Corp. marked the limit of retrenchment -of manufacturers. Spokesmen for the Hudson and Packard companies said they were not contemplating similar cuts. Rumors recently that the Chrysler Corp. had considered reductions

The General Motors cuts, ranging from 10 per cent to 30 per cent, af--fected approximately 40,000 salaried employees. They were expected to amount to approximately eight million dollars figured on the basis of 75 million paid to salaried workers in 1936. High’ executives were shown recently to have received as much as $150,000 in base pay annually. Under the reduction scale, their salaries would be cut about $42,000 or 28 per cent, absorbing approximately 15 weeks’ pay. A $40-a-week office worker, on the other hand, would lost $208 a year, or 10 per cent, representing slightly more

Alfred P. Sloan, chaiygman, attributed the reductions to “drastic reductions in the volume of busi-

the fact that the company’s wage earners (those who work at hourly rates) have suffered heavy losses in income through reductions in hours of work.
