OF 9000 FARMS ~ AWAITING FUNDS

Indiana Projects Organized Long Ago Held Up by Lack Of Appropriations.

Approximately 9000 Indiana farmers, scanning their Washington dispatches by kerosene lamps, are hop‘ing daily to read that more money has been appropriated for Indiana Rural Electrification projects. Projects to take care of that number were organized and subscribed long ago, but the $2,700,000 necessary to finance them has not yet been appropriated. Already $5,765,926 has been made available in Indiana for more than 5500 miles of lines’ that serve approximately 18,000 formers, now cooperative members. E. E. Houser of the Indiana Rural Electrification Administration said today that, if the additional funds were received and, all farms to which eelctricity was available became customers, \approximately 40 per cent of the State’s farms would be electrified.

Far Above Average

This would be in sharp contrast to the country as a whole, which now has but 16.8 per cent electrification of farms.

In 1928, only about 6 per cent of America’s 6,800,000 farms received electric energy. In 1935, the ratio stood at about 10 per cent.

In other words, one farm home in|

every six has electric power. Three years ago it was one in 10 and 10 years ago it was one in 16. When REA projects already completed or under construction are fully in operation, it is esfimated that they will be delivering energy to 200,000 rural families in 41 States. This estimate does not include some 115 _ additional projects on which work has not started. About 1,200,000 farm homes now have, or soon will have, electric energy.

18 States Aid Projects

In 18 States, rural ge eatin projects have been implenferited by State laws, which usually take the form of statutes providing for the establishment of rural electric mem-

bership corporations. These States besides Indiana are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Ken- . tucky, Montana, Mississippi, rasta, Nevada, North Carolina, orth Dakota, Pennsylvania, South lina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. | The REA strongly urges enactment of similar statutes elsewhere, os at the same time warns farmers to “be on their guard against certain types of legislation designed to protect selfish interests at the expense of farmers’ needs. Quite commonly such statutes seek to restrict areas in which co-operatives may be set up, thus ‘freezing’ much territory for the utilities without any guarantee sina they will serve it.”
