33 MAJOR GAMES ON TONIGHT'S STATE PREP CARD'
Muncie’s Lead | Is Threatened By Frankfort
Bearcats Play Alexandria as
Hot Dogs Tackle Logansport.
MUNCIE, Feb. 25. — Raymond
(Pete) Jolly, the Muncie net maes- |
tro, is like a hero tied to a railroad
track in an old melodrama today. |
He and his Bearcats must lie still
| in first place in the North Central | ij
Conference tonight while the Frankfort Special, engineered by Everett Case, bears down upon them. All that can save the Bearcats is a bunch of Logansport Berries spilled out on the loop track. If Case gets his vehicle past the Berries, the Hot Dogs will tie Muncie for top ' spof in the circuit chase, won a year ago by the Frankforters.
Muncie takes on Alexandria at}
home in a nonleague game. Central of Evansville, a’ question mark in southern Indiana, invades Bedford in another of tonight's 33 major contests. If Central doesn’t prevail against the Stonecutters, Central adherents will have to keep quiet, for now is the time when all good coaches — Central's Mark Wakefield included — are bringing their teams to peak performance. League Tie Indicated Although Martinsville has concluded “its season, the Artesians’ Sotith Central crown is in imminent danger. Tonight at Greensburg, the Tree City tossers take on the lamblike Rushville Lions. A Pirate victory—which is expected—would give Greensburg and Martinsville identical league standings and renew the oral battle for the circuit flag. Greensburg has been voted out of the league race because the Pirates didn’t play all loop members—missing Martinsville—but Coach H. H. Newgent and the Buccaneers are certain to appeal their case if the Lions fall. . Another South Central conflict— Greencastle at Columbus tonight— may turn out to be a championship game if Greensburg’s strong protests cause the conference members to revoke their original decision and ‘declare both the Artesians and the - Pirates ineligible for the loop laurels. Columbus is in third place, Greencastle in fourth. The Tiger Cubs can pass Columbus by winning. Along the Ohio River, Jasper’s mixup with Jeffersonville occupies tonight's spotlight. Woody Weir's Wildcats are unknown quantities in the southern sector while Jeffersonville is struggling to regain the glory it achieved earlier in the year. Attention in the northern Indiana section will be divided between La Porte and Oxford. At La Porte the home forces will battle Emerson of Gary. Emerson and the Slicers were runnersup in the Western and Eastern divisions of the N.I1.LH. S.C. Tonight's encounter should go to La Porte by previous performance ratings but Emerson, with dazzling Pete Fogo at the helm, may cut down the: Slicers and establish itself as chief challenger to the championship aspirations of Hammond and Elkhart, the two division win- ‘ ners. At Oxford, Monticello seeks to close its season of 24° games unbeaten. The Indians rate as: the strongest small-school club in their part of Hoosierland, far superior to most of the opposition they encountered during the season.
‘Three Blue Devil Teams To Play at Anderson
‘ Shortridge’s net: bout with Anderson at Anderson tonight heads the list of seven games involving local prep basketball quintets. Varsity, reserve and freshman games between Shortridge and Anderson teams are billed with the opening tilt set for 6 p. m. Sacred Heart opened week-end activities of local schools last night, losing a 36-to-34 ‘decision at Knightstown. i Sacred Heart lost a 17-to-15 halfime advantage during the third quarter but rallied in the last period to come within one point of the Falcons. At this point, Al - Kopp, star cenfer, hit two field goals for htstown and the
Falcons held onto the ball “until
- the game ended. Sacred Heart will end its sched’ ule at Westfield tomorrow. Beech Grove's strong Hornets entertain Manuals Redskins and Broad Ripple plays host at Short-
ridge to Warren Central in city- /
county battles. Tech travels to Franklin for @ clash with the seventh-place South “= Central loop five. Washington's city ‘champions will
