ALARM TRAPS SUSPECT WITH $10,000 LOOT

Hole in Roof Too Small to Let Alleged Burglar Escape.-

Trapped in the Fairbanks Loan Co., 213 E. Washington St., when he was unable to escape through a hole in the roof, Lavertus Arrington, 35, of 764 N. Miley Ave., today was held on a burglary charge and police had recovered $10,000 worth of jewelry.

Meanwhile, police and deputy sheriffs were investigating holdups at a meat market, drug store and garage and several burglaries.

Called to the loan company early yesterday when the burglar alarm sounded, police said the store had Yeen entered through a hole in the n was hiding beneath a tt of clothing, they said.

Trapped With Loot

The alleged burglar had filled a bag with jewelry and watches valued at $10,000 and a small trunk with clothes and cameras. He then found he was unable to squeeze through the small hole he had cut in the roof, according to police. When he attempted to leave by a door, the alarm was set off, police said. ; Four men who held the proprietor, clerk and a customer at bay Saturday night took $400 in cash and several checks at a meat market at 3025 S. Rural St. : They fled in an auto after pointing guns at Eugene Lutz, 35, meat market owner; George Fritche, 21, of 3003 S. Rural St., a clerk, and Albert Winklemeyer of 718 Sumner Ave., a customer. Two men who held up a drug store at Naomi and Shelby Sts. Saturday night looted the registers of $50. They ordered Howard Abdon, 24, of 322 N. Arsenal Ave., manager, and two clerks, Pred Kehl, 20, of 2116 Ringgold Ave., and Carl Kyburg, 20, of 130 N. Dickson St., to the rear of the store while they fled.

Two Taxi Drivers Robbed

Wilbur Coy, 32, of 3400 Carson St., told police two men robbed him of $5. Two taxicab drivers reported they were ‘held up by passengers during the week-end. James Armon, 23, of 1345 Olive St., said two armed men took $4 from him, while William R. Wise, 24, of 4532 E. Washington St., reported a passenger robbed him of $4.90. A burglar who ransacked the home of Frank J. Schuster, 904 E. Troy Ave. took clothing, a camera, binoculars and other articles valued at $130. -Clothing valued at $50 was stolen from the Capitol Cleaners, Inc., 211 S. State Ave., the manager, Mrs. Anna Berting, 1143 Spann Ave. reported to police. A young man who knocked down Miss Emma Fuller, 903 N. Hamilton - Ave., stole her pocketbook as she left the rear door of the Occidental Building Saturday night.

BUTLER ENROLLS 1396 FOR DAY DIVISION

Butler University has an enrollment of 1396 in the day division for the second semester, it was announced today by Mrs. Ruth Deming, ‘registrar. The largest enrollment, 621, is in the College of Liberal Arts. The College of Business Administration has 382 and the College of Education 273. The College of Religion has 88 students, while 32 are taking graduate instruction work.

STATE BEGINS STUDY OF WELFARE LAWS

Thurman A. Gottschalk, State welfare administrator, today was authorized by Governor Townsend to appoint a special study commission on codification of Indiana’s child welfare laws. The Governor's action is in response to American Legion . requests that work of the 1933 special legislative committe on the subject be completed. Mr. Gottschalk said first meeting of the study commission will be called here within the next few weeks.

STICKER CHANGE PROPOSAL FAGES COUNCIL TONIGHT

The City Council tonight is scheduled to consider a proposed amendment to the traffic ordinance which would ‘place’ responsibility for collections of unpaid sticker fines on Police Chief Morrissey. This amendment would limit all sticker fines to $2 instead of the present graduated scale of $2 for the first offense, $3 for the second and $5 each for all subsequent offenses. The measure was recommended to the Safety Board by Chief Morrissey some time ago. The Council also is to consider a resolution. which would . empower Mayor Boetcher to appoint. a local housing authority of five members.
