BREWERS SEEK OHIOANS’ AIDIN BEER FEE FIGHT

Buckeye Distributors May |) Test $1500 Additional License Edict.

Indiana brewers today were reported seeking the aid of Ohio beer

which “dries up” Indiana Wholeoutlets in that state. | Harold Peightner, Indiana Brew=rs’ Association executive secretary,

udy the new threat to Indiana’s er export business. | Under the Ohio ruling, distriburs handling Indiana beer are charged an additional $1500 annual license fee. Since this order deals exclusively with the Ohio lquor control, attorneys said they doubted that Indiana brewers could spring

| suit in Federal Court.

Ohio Test Case Possible

They said. an attack probably could be launched by Ohio distribu’ tors or brewers in Ohio courts, . Brewers in the Cincinnati area, who do a large export business into southern Indiana,=are .said to be opposed to the ruling, which was backed by northern. Ohio brewers. Michigan also has placed an embargo against Indiana beer, and this action has been upheld by a three-judge Federal Court. Indiana brewers plan to take an appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court. In retaliation the Indiana Alcoholic Beverages Commission placed a ban on all Michigan alcoholic products, and asked authorities of nine other states, which also are forbidden to export beer fo Michie gan, what action they expected to take.

Maine Not Inferested

Hugh A. Barnhart, State Excise director, received the following reply from H. S. Boardman, Maine Liquor Commission chairman: “Since the State of Maine has no breweries located within its borders, we are naturally not very much interested in the action taken by the State of Michigan, and do not expect to take like action.” Declaring he would do whatever he could to protect &n Indiana ine dustry, Governor Townsend said: “It seems a shame to set up bar= riers at state lines. I thought that sort of thing was supposed to be ended when the Federal Constitue tion was ratified. 5 “I don’t know much about the beer business, but I think, since the people want it and it now is part of our system, it ought to be protected. Crippling the business of Ine diana breweries would result in lowe

| er wages or loss of work for brewery

employees, and we don’t want that if we can help it.”

FIRE TRUCK STALLS VERNON, Mo., Feb. 18 (U. P.).— A house was ablaze on the outskirts of town, but the fire truck wouldn't start. Firemen had to push it to the scene of the alarm. When they arrived they were too tired to fight the flames, so a second volunteer group took charge. "The house was saved.
