TOSCANINI DROPS § SALZBURG PLANS

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (U. P.). —Arturo Toscanini, noted syms= phony conductor, today abandoned plans to participate in the Salzburg music festival this year because of “the unsettled conditions in Austria.” ‘He said that a benefit cone cert in Carnegie Hall March 4, originally intended to help finance the festival, would be held, but that 75 per cent of the proceeds would go to a New York local of the American Federation of Musicians and 25 per cent to the Verdi home for destitute musicians in Milan, Italy. . )

An Indianapolis arrival at 8:16 a. m. seemed a bit early for Albert Spalding (right), the famous American violinist, and he was a little sleepy when he alighted at the Union Station this morning. He will be soloist with' the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra this afternoon-and

particularly apparent. Her contours are streamlined, though they had a hard time posing her in a playsuit to prove it. There was a solemn conference of

here a‘ few months ago. In three

solid days of tests they made her}

look like everybody from Martha Raye to Shirley Temple. - Finally Annabella got mad and told ’em she'd try her own way. First she washed her face, then she ran a comb through her hair, dabbed on a little lipstick and stepped before the camera. ; Studio bigwigs looked at the test and agreed that that was just what they wanted.’ ? Annabella says that she isn't temperamental in the sense of being mean and eccentric, but admits she can get angry and stick.up for her rights as she sees them. She likes any sort of role as long as it's substantial. She considers a lot of interviewers are rude or stupid, or both. . She hates posing for still pictures, but that’s a hangover from her girlhood—when her father, a camera fan, would spend hours snapping her in the garden. . And now, she still has’ to pose. I saw one of her lessons. The French star laboriously had written: “Last Sdturday I saw.20 happy children in the park. . . . Berry,

‘Believed Dwarfs Real

It is reported that many peasants of the Hartz Mountains have believed in the dwarfs’ actual existence. In former years woodsmen swore that they saw the little men going to their work of digging gems from fairy mines, or returning to their mountain homes at sundown. The Hartz Mountains have always been a favorite haunt of good and bad spirits, as well as the best singing canaries. And according to local legends, the seven mountain gnomes always enlisted the aid of birds and beasts in their contest with the evil spirits. Hence, their natural assistance to the homeless Snow White in the film, All this glorified story-telling of Mr. Disney’s becomes an absorbing experience for even the most casehardened movie patron. But the completeness of this absorption, especially among the younger spectators, is attested by Kenneth T. Collins, Indiana manager. “Never at any time or in any theater with which I have been connected,” says Mr. Collins, “have I seen .so many lost - articles as during the past week.” A hard-working corps of ushers collected a miscellaneous array of some 350 pieces over the week-end. Scarfs predominated, but there was a liberal representation of gloves,

caps, hats, overshoes and purses.|:

And there were many articles called for which never were found. So mothers had best tie a string on the children’s mittens, pin on the handkerchiefs and otherwise hitch all detachable impedimenta, then take the youngsters to 80 minutes of “relaxation” and enjoyment with perfect confidence,
