Governor Orders Survey 7After 22 Per Cent Increase Is Reported.

Aeting on the suggestion of Gov--ernor Townsend, the State Finan cial Institutions Department today is conducting a survey of taxes paid by Indiana’s 550 banks. * Findings are to be turned over to the Governor's Tax Study Committee, which is to submit recommendations to the 1939 Legislature.

Don E. Warrick, Indiana Bankers’ Association secretary, said a recent analysis showed that bank taxes were 22 per cent higher in 1936 than in 1935. State banks, Mr. Warrick said, now pay property, gross income, in-

come, Federal stamp and Federal capital stock taxes. National banks are exempt from payment of the gross income tax levy.
