By WILLIAM BOEHNEL Times Special Writer

NEW YORK, Feb. 17—Dopey, already as famous as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, must live and die with “Snow White and the Seven

Dwarfs,” Walt Disney told the writer yesterday during a long-distance telephone interview from Hollywood. “No, I'll never use Dopey again,” Mr. Disney said. “If people want to see him as he is they must see him in ‘Snow White,” because I feel he I live and die with the picture. Of course, I'll probably recreate him in another character, but you'll never be able to recognize him.” “Do you really mean you're never going to use Dopey again?” the writer asked. Mr. Disney chuckled over the other end of the wire. “I do,” he said. “I believe it would be too commercial to cash in on Dopey or any of the other characters we have inthe film. What we probably will do is to combine two or three more of them into one new character.”

Lovable Dwarf Doomed

And so the most lovable of all the seven dwarfs—the one into whom

Disney and his staff put more than

just-a spark of human frailty, the one more akin to all the world than any of the others—must pass when and if the picture finally passes, which seems unlikely at the moment. For the chances are that “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” will live on forever, and even if by some misfortune of fate it should ever

" pass into the limbo of memory

Dopey will remain as vividly alive _as the day he was born. “How do you feel about the public’s reception of the film?” gro writer asked when he gof over the

‘shock of hearing Mr. Disney pro-

claim poor Dopey’s obituary. “Marvelous,” Mr. Disney prac-

. tically beamed over the telephone,

“put I think we've been very lucky. After all, we stopped work on the film six months ago and had plenty of. time to wonder how it would be receiv . “Are you satisfied with the results?” “Not satisfied,” he replied, “but I'm happy over the way the film has been received because it proves that cartoon features can make good entertainment.

Room. for Improvement

“No, I'm not satisfied,” he continued, “because there are a lot of things I could have improved upon —technical treatment, story construction, the handling of the drawings, the characterizations of Snow White, the Prince and the Queen and the comedy. When it was finished I wanted to start it all over again.” “What are you going to do next?” “We're working on a picturization of Felix Stalten’s ‘Bambi,’ which deals with the life of a deer. For the time being weé’'ve laid aside the

idea of making ‘Pinnocchio.’”

“How many features are you going to make a year?”

“Only one,” Mr. Disney said, “be- | cause theyre too hard to make, dt

would be practically impossible to make more, not only because of the tremendous amount of work involved but because talent is scarce. Of course, we're training new talent, but it takes years ‘before you get results. Besides, I think it is best not to put too many of them on the market.” “What about this new method of recording that Leopold Stokowski

music and interpret it with color, characters and action so that everybody will be able to appreciate it, and not just the few who know music. What. it will require is a

sort of ‘monitor man’ in every theater to control and gauge the recording according to the number of people in the theater.” At the presegs time Spanish and French versi of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” have been completed in Hollywood, and plans are under way for versions in Dutch, Greek, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Italian, the last two to be made in Germany and Italy, respectively, because of government regulations.
