HALLECK NOTES RESURGENCE OF

REPUBLICANISM

Refuses to, Say Whether He Will Seek Senatorial Nomination.

Times Special WASHINGTON, Feb. 17.—Rep. Charles A. Halleck, who returned today from Indiana where he made several - Lincoln Day speeches, reported a “definite resurgence of Republicanism in the State.

He refused to say, however, that :

it is such that he might seek the senatorial nomination.

Mr. Halleck is the sole Republican in Congress from Indiana. at this time. : : His colleague, Rep. Bruce ‘Barton (R. N. Y)., an advertising man, called him “one of the new Lincoln’s arising in the West.” While Mr. Halleck blushed a bit at this, he did declare that he thought that his party would return to power through embacing the principles of Lincoln, rather than imitating those of the New Deal.

Represents Middle Class

“As founded and placed in power, the Republican party represented the great middle classes of America,” Mr. Halleck asserted. “It must come to mean that again. “I noticed that in the huge meetings I attended in Indiana it was tiiis group that made up the mass of those attending. There were no ‘brass hats,’ but the working man of skill and ability, professional people, small businessmen and those who believe that property should be the reward of industry. Our task should be to proteet this middle class which has made America ‘great in the past. We want to see that class warfare is abolished by having our people neither too rich nor too poor. That was what I always understood Republicanism meant in the Middle West and I really. think that it did—there.”

FRED SMITHS BACK

- ‘ NEW YORK, Feb. 17 (U. P.)— “Think of it—President Fred Smith, Vice President Fred Smith. . .” It was Fred Smith talking, doing a bit of speculating at the second annual dinner of the Benevolent and Protective and Completely Universal Order of Fred Smiths of America. i . “There are 3000 of us now organjzed throughout the country,” said Mr. Smith. “That means 3000 cells of influence. Fred Smiths, that is a terrific political bloc. We're growing all the time. By 1940 we may be able ‘to swing the election. Think of it.;...”
