Proprietor’s Signal Foils Gem Robber

Albert Joss, proprietor of a jewelry store at 348 Indiana Ave, today had outwitted a Negro bandit who had robbed him twice before. Several months ago, two men walked into the store, ‘asked to be shown articles and then robbed Mr. Joss. Two ‘weeks ago, the same two men repeated the performance, drawing revolvers after getting "Mr. Joss to the rear of the store. Yesterday Mr. Joss started to wait on a customer, then recognized him as one of the bandits.

Signal Prearranged " The man asked to see spectacles in a rear counter.

“They're not for sale,” he was told.

“What's the matter—afraid of me?” the bandit asked. “This time I don’t want anything.” As they talked, Mr. Joss backed against the wall and rapped a signal he had arranged with Miss Joella Durant, proprietor of the beauty parlor next door, following the robbery two weeks ago. * Miss Durant heard the signal. As she rushed into the Jewelry store, the bandit fled.
