LEGION INDORSES ADDED DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS

Statement Urges Adoption “Of Universal Service * Plan. Basis.

Legislation to provide adequate national defense based on the prine ciple of universal service was urged in a statement issued hére today by Daniel J. Doherty, American Legion national commander. : He repeated the Legion's advocacy of the universal service plan so that in time of war “there would be an assurance of equal opportunity for all to serve, with special profit and privilege for none.” The statement was issued in connection with the Legion's observance of National Defense Week.

Citing that “treaties have been vi-

olated and disarmament agreements terminated,” he added: “In these circumstances it would be, foolhardy further to neglect the strengthening of our military forces . The present standing of our . national defense with respect to

that of other world powers is dan-

gerously low.” ‘Protection Necessary

He warned hat “weakness always

has been invitation for war. Strength is the best guarantee of peace for America and especially so pea view of current world sityation.” He said national defense necessarily is costly, but that protection of the nation’s citizens and institutions “transcends every other consideration.” -He said that the individual responsibility of each Legion member is to communicate with members of Congress, urging immediate and favorable action to provide a stronger national defense.
