3 U. S. CRUISERS NEAR SINGAPORE
FOR INAUGURAL |

SINGAPORE, Straits Settlements,
Feb. 11 (U. P.). ~The United States |.
cruisers Memphis, Milwaukee and Trenton are expected toanchor here
Sunday to be the guests of Great Britain at the opening of the $100,000,000 Singapore naval! base, 1500 miles from British Hongkong and 3000 miles from Japan. Maneuvers just ended provided the first big test of the intended impregnability of this “Gibraltar of the East”; Monday the base proper, with its accompanying floating dock, will be formerally inaugurated.
Other Ships Arrive
Three French warships and a Netherlands warship already were lying off Singapore. The principal interest was in the American ships, en route from Sydney, Australia, and it was suggested that they might remain here for two weeks or longer—-sufficient, as it is said here, to make it obvious that they are welcome guests, Though Monday's opening is purely formal, some significance attaches to it. It marks the official completition of 10 years of work by thousands of coolies, who have converted this island off the Malay Peninsula from a snake and crocodile infested swamp-jungle into a Twentieth Century fortress which brings the might of the British Navy some thousands of miles toward the Far East. Giant naval guns, the new fioating dock big enough to hold a 50,000-ton ship; airports; enormous stores of fuel safe underground, great repair shops—everything, in fact, needed not only to defend the base but to supply a fleet which, in war time, could be used presumably only against Japan—are ready at last.
Entente Is Hinted
All these facilities will be dis played to officers of the three American cruisers due here Sunday. Extensive plans have been made to entertain the crews and the Singapore Municipality and the Colonial Government have appropriated special funds, Commenting today on denials from Washington of any BritishAmerican naval agreement, the Singapore Free Press said: “The most casual observer can see that the decision to send three American cruisers to Singapore was actuated by more than a desire to repeat those good-will visits which have featured Singapore's naval life in recent years. “Those who know something of the causes behind the speculation over the meaning of the visit are satisfied that if the facts are ever known they will prove a surprise for those who persist in believing that the United States naval visit of Monday falls into the same category as other visits to Singapore.”
