BUSINESS SOON DUE TO RECOVER
Predicts End to Fluctuations If Planned Production Is Utilized.
Times Special PERU, Feb. 10—Governor Townsend today had predicted that Indiana would profit by the business recovery which he said would take place this year. Speaking here last night, the Governor said that railroads, utilities
and other great industries are announcing huge spending programs to replace obsolete equipment. “In addition, the ¥ederal Government is ‘to spend $800,000,000 to strengthen our Army and Navy, and the new housing program is to provide employment for thousands of workers,” he said. “Stocks are depleted and many warehouses are empty now, but when these spending programs of Government and industry get underway, business generally will fill up its shelves to meet the public demand. “The Government has been trying to curb industrial cycles which shake the foundation sof our economic system, and apparently business has agreed to accept the wise principle of planned production.
Urges Planned Production
“If production is planned on the basis of consumer needs, and if profits are based on a reasonable return on the investment, great steps will have been taken to eliminate severe economic fluctuations.” Pointing out that the Federal Government has recognized the importance of agriculture as a stabilizing factor in economics, the Governor said national farm income has climbed from its 1932 low point of $4,500,000,000 to the 1936 figure of more than eight billion. He also predicted prosperity would result because “industry and labor have adopted the conference technique for settling disputes.” He warned that increased profits should follow increased wages.
DEMOCRATS TO RALLY
The Democratic Club of Precinct 1, Center Town$hip (Outside), will meet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roland J. Stahley, 405 N. 17th St. Beech Grove, at 8 p. m. tomorrow. A card party will follow the business meeting.
