- SYPHILIS DRUGS WILL BE FREE IN INDIGENT CASES
15 Venereal Disease Clinics Established in State Health Drive.
Plans have been formulated for the free distribution of anti= syphilis drugs to indigent patients, Dr. Verne K. Harvey, State Health director, announced today. The treatment is to be given re= pardless of the stage of the disease, he said, and is to consist of 20 doses of an arsenical compound and 20 injections of bismuth subsalicylate. In co-operation with eity and county health authorities, the State Health Board now ig operating 15 venereal disease clinics in various sections of the State. The Board also is receiving monthly reports from the States | five penal and correctional institu= | tions, 100,000 Tests Expected Dr. Harvey predicted the State ficalth Board laboratory will give | more than 100,000 free blood tests | for syphilis during the year. Repent yearly averages have been 50,~ | 000 tests. A new and cheaper method of | testing blood has been inaugurated | by the Board, Dr. Harvey said. In the past the State and private | pathologists pave Wassermann, | Kahn and Kline tests to each | patient, | Hereafter, only the Kline test is to be given in the first instance. | Dr. Harvey said if this test registers negative no further examination | will be made. In the event the Kline test proves positive the other two tests are to be made. Declaring that co-operation is veeded to make the campalgh a | success, Dr, Harvey said: “The private pathologkts in Indiana have demonstrated pevond all doubt their altruistic attitude and have entered this campaign with the spirit of putting aside pri= vate interest.”
